Unveiling the effects of key factors in enhancing gastroesophageal reflux: A fluid-structure analysis before and after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

Ilaria Toniolo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) using computational models. It found that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy could induce de novo GERD and worsen pre-existing GERD. Variables such as the His-angle, antral dimension, and bolus viscosity were found to affect reflux increase.

Subject-specific biomechanical analysis to estimate locations susceptible to osteoarthritis-Finite element modeling and MRI follow-up of ACL reconstructed patients

Paul O. Bolcos et al.

Summary: This case-control study aimed to identify cartilage locations and volumes susceptible to osteoarthritis using subject-specific finite element models, and quantify the relationships between biomechanical parameters and MRI relaxation times. The study found a significant correlation between predicted degeneration volumes based on maximum principal stresses and actual degeneration volumes determined from MRI T-2 relaxation times. The modeling methodology could be useful in prospectively identifying ACL reconstructed patients at risk of OA based on biomechanical analysis of cartilage stresses.

A Continuum-Tensegrity Computational Model for Chondrocyte Biomechanics in AFM Indentation and Micropipette Aspiration

Alessandro Arduino et al.

Summary: Mechanical stimuli play a fundamental role in the development and disease of organs and tissues. The study of cell biomechanics is gaining increasing interest, with experimental and computational models being used to understand cell mechanical behavior. This study proposes a combined continuous-tensegrity finite element (FE) model to analyze the mechanical response of cells and their subcomponents.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty: a narrative review on historical evolution, physiology, outcomes, and future standpoints

Vitor Ottoboni Brunaldi et al.

Summary: Since its first description in 2013, there has been growing evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). Some studies have even reported 5-year data, and ESG combined with pharmacotherapy may achieve weight loss similar to surgical sleeve gastrectomy. While ongoing randomized trials are awaited, current data support the clinical use of ESG, especially for patients who are unwilling or unfit for bariatric surgery.

Precision medicine in human heart modeling Perspectives, challenges, and opportunities

M. Peirlinck et al.

Summary: Precision medicine is a new approach in healthcare that customizes medical treatment based on each individual's genes, anatomy, physiology, and lifestyle. In the field of cardiovascular health, precision medicine shows promise in improving quality of life and reducing mortality rates. The role of human heart modeling in precision medicine is still being explored, but personalized models can be created using machine learning and population-based libraries, rather than requiring fully personalized high-resolution whole heart models.

Quality of Life After Bariatric Surgery-a Systematic Review with Bayesian Network Meta-analysis

Piotr Malczak et al.

Summary: Through systematic review and network meta-analysis, it was found that sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass may lead to better health-related quality of life at most follow-up time points. Long-term analysis shows that bariatric interventions result in better HRQoL than non-surgical interventions.

Patient-Specific Finite Element Models of Posterior Pedicle Screw Fixation: Effect of Screw's Size and Geometry

Marco Sensale et al.

Summary: Finite element models based on patient-specific CT scans of human vertebrae with pedicle screws were used to evaluate the effects of screw size and geometry on mechanical properties. Results showed that screw diameter plays a major role in the mechanics, simplified screws can estimate mechanical properties but may underestimate peak stress consistently.

Patient-specific computational modeling of endovascular aneurysm repair: State of the art and future directions

Stephane Avril et al.

Summary: Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) has become the preferred intervention for aortic aneurysms and dissections due to its less invasive nature compared to open surgery. However, while in-hospital mortality rates are lower for EVAR, complications in the EVAR group lead to the loss of early benefits after 3 years. Computational modeling offers a personalized way to test stent-graft designs and optimize EVAR interventions, with a focus on developing fast algorithms for real-time solutions and addressing uncertainties related to patient aortic wall degradation.

Validating Patient-Specific Finite Element Models of Direct Electrocortical Stimulation

Chantel M. Charlebois et al.

Summary: This study validated patient-specific computational models of DECS and quantified the effects of electrode localization parameters on simulated voltages on the cortical surface. The research found that greater cerebral spinal fluid depth between the electrode and cortical surface increased model errors and decreased predicted voltage accuracy.
