Ultra-high modulus epoxy resin reinforced by intensive hydrogen bond network: From design, synthesis, mechanism to applications

Junliang He et al.

Summary: In this paper, a polar epoxy resin with amide bond was efficiently synthesized, which was ingeniously designed according to the relationship between structure and performance as well as high-throughput screening. The free volume of this resin could be reduced by introducing high density of hydrogen bonds with strong bond energy based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The resin with ultra-high modulus as well as good interface property has great potential in the high-performance carbon fiber composite industry.

Bifunctional linear polyphosphazene decorated by allyl groups: Synthesis and application as efficient flame-retardant and toughening agent of bismaleimide

Xia Zhou et al.

Summary: A novel allyl-functionalized linear polyphosphazene (PMAP) was designed and synthesized to improve the toughness and fire safety of bismaleimide resin (BMI). The inclusion of 3wt% PMAP reduced the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) of BMI/PMAP-3 by 51.3% and 17.8% respectively. The residual char of BMI/PMAP also increased significantly. The flame-retardant mechanism of BMI/PMAP was proposed to involve the formation of a char layer in the condensed phase and the generation of phosphorous oxygen free radicals in the gas phase.

Construction of bismaleimide resin with enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical properties based on a novel DOPO-derived bismaleimide monomer

Xin Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel type of BMI monomer (MADQ) based on phosphorus series flame retardant DOPO is designed to improve the fire safety and toughness of BMI. The incorporation of MADQ reduces the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of resultant BMI/MADQ-5 by 37.7% and 33.9%, respectively. Modified BMI/MADQ-1 achieves UL-94V-0 rating and shows significantly higher impact strength. The research provides an innovative idea and basis for the preparation of intrinsic flame-retardant and toughened BMI.

Synthesis of magnolol-derived bisphosphate for fabrication of bismaleimide resins with intrinsic anti-flammability and smoke suppression

Wenwen Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a magnolol-derived bisphosphate (MBDPP) was successfully synthesized and applied for the fabrication of flame-retardant bismaleimide (BMI) thermosets. The addition of MBDPP increased the reaction activation energy and improved the anti-flammability and smoke suppression performances of the BMI thermosets by forming an intact char layer.

Exploring the effects of cardanol-based co-curing agents with different phosphorus structures on the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of bismaleimide resin

Xin Jiang et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the flammability and brittleness issues of BMI and reduce the reliance on petroleum-based materials. Three types of cardanol-based co-curing agents were synthesized and applied to modify BMI. The modified BMI showed enhanced thermal stability and flame retardancy compared to the neat BMI. Additionally, the impact strength of the modified BMI was significantly improved by incorporating the co-curing agents.

Synthesis of star-shaped allyl phosphazene small molecules for enhancing fire safety and toughness of high performance BMI resin

Xia Zhou et al.

Summary: The research focused on enhancing the flame retardant and toughness properties of bismaleimide resin (BMI) by designing and synthesizing two star-shaped allyl functionalized phosphazene small molecules. It was found that the inclusion of these molecules effectively suppressed heat and smoke release in BMI, while also significantly improving fire safety performance and toughness. Addition of HMACP and HECP led to decreased fire growth index (FGI) and increased fire performance index (FPI) in BMI samples, indicating improved fire safety performance. Furthermore, impact strength was notably increased, showcasing enhanced toughness in BMI resin with the modification of HMACP and HECP.
