Damage evolution in braided composite tubes under axial compression studied by combining infrared thermography and X-ray computed tomography

Zhenyu Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of axial yarns on the damage behavior of 2DTBC tubes subjected to axial compression. A novel damage detection method combining infrared thermography and CT scanning was proposed. The presence of axial yarns resulted in different failure modes, with interlayer delamination and folding failure occurring in the absence of axial yarns, and splaying failure occurring in the presence of axial yarns. The use of more axial yarns increased energy absorption but also fiber usage.

The impact of the fiber volume fraction on the fatigue performance of glass fiber composites

U. A. Mortensen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dependence of fatigue resistance on the fiber volume fraction of a non-crimp glass fiber fabric reinforced polyester polymer matrix composite, ranging from 55% to 60% fiber volume. The experimental investigation includes tension-tension, tension-compression, and compression-compression cyclic loading cases, considering both overall and local fiber volume fractions. It is observed that higher fiber volume fraction cases also have higher porosity densities. The tension-tension fatigue loading is found to be most dependent on the fiber volume fraction, while the compression-compression case shows the least dependency.

An Experimental Comprehensive Analysis of Drilling Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic Tubes and Comparison With Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic Plate

Sezer Morkavuk et al.

Summary: This study compares the drilling machinability of CFRP tubes and CFRP plates produced by different methods. Experimental results show that the plate generates more force and damage during drilling compared to the tubes, making it more difficult to machine. The filament wound tube exhibits higher thrust force and damage compared to the roll wrapped tube. Additionally, the use of support does not increase the thrust force in composite tubes, but significantly improves drilling-induced delamination damage behavior. The plate provides better borehole surface quality compared to the tubes, but more dust chip formation is observed.

Degradation of torsional behaviors of 3-D braided thin-walled tubes after atmospheric thermal ageing

Limeng Xun et al.

Summary: Both temperature rise and ageing time extension will decrease the shear modulus and torque strength, with temperature having a greater influence on modulus and torque strength degradation than ageing time. Ageing at different temperatures results in different torsional damages, such as resin crack and yarn breakage at 110 degrees C and yarn pull-out at 180 degrees C.

Failure modes of bonded wrapped composite joints for steel circular hollow sections in ultimate load experiments

Pei He et al.

Summary: This paper presents an innovative bonded joining technology as an alternative to traditional welded connection for steel circular hollow section. Wrapped composite joints are tested in static experiments to characterize their resistance and failure modes, which are necessary for understanding their potential for high fatigue endurance. The results show that wrapped composite joints have larger stiffness and ultimate load compared to welded counterparts. Debonding and fracture of the composite material are identified as the main failure modes in tensile experiments, while cracking of the composite material is the governing failure mode in bending experiments.

Bending Failure Behavior of the Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite I-Beams Formed by a Novel Bending Pultrusion Processing Technique

Lvtao Zhu et al.

Summary: Glass fiber reinforced resin matrix composite I-beams were designed and formed using a novel bending pultrusion processing technique, and three-point bending tests were conducted to analyze their mechanical bending performances. Results show that the main failure mode involves upper structure cracks along the length of fibers under bending load, with bifurcated cracks at the top flange and web junction. The main bending failure mechanism includes matrix cracking, crack propagation, and final fracture failure, with lateral bifurcation occurring at the I-shaped neck position leading to ultimate fracture failure.

Investigations of defect effect on dynamic compressive failure of 3D circular braided composite tubes with numerical simulation method

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigated the impacts of manufacturing defects and braiding angles on the impact compressive properties of 3D carbon fiber/epoxy resin braided composite tubes. The results show that random defects have a negative influence on the compressive failure mechanisms of the braided tubes, and non-ideal models containing appropriate random defects are more accurate in simulating the dynamic compressive failure evolution process.

The Influences of Projectile Material and Environmental Temperature on the High Velocity Impact Behavior of Triaxial Braided Composites

Lulu Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of three different projectiles on triaxial braided composite panels, finding that soft gelatin projectile absorbs more energy while CFRP projectile leads to shear fracture damage pattern. The environmental temperature was found to influence the damage pattern and energy absorption behavior of triaxial braided composites.

Effect of Structural Differences on the Mechanical Properties of 3D Integrated Woven Spacer Sandwich Composites

Lvtao Zhu et al.

Summary: In this research, 3D integrated woven spacer sandwich composites of five different specifications were produced and their mechanical properties were investigated under different load conditions using XR-CT images to visualize microstructural details and analyze fracture morphologies. The effects of warp and weft direction, face sheet thickness, and core pile height on the mechanical properties of the composite materials were also analyzed. This investigation can offer significant guidance for designing new products based on required mechanical properties.
