A space-time upscaling technique for modeling high-cycle fatigue-damage of short-fiber reinforced composites

Nicola Magino et al.

Summary: In this study, a computational strategy for characterizing short-fiber reinforced polymers under high-cycle fatigue loading is proposed. The strategy utilizes a mean-stress dependent fatigue-damage model and computational multiscale approaches to reduce the necessary mechanical tests. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through simulation of stiffness degradation in fatigue experiments.

Characterization and modeling of fatigue behavior of chopped glass fiber reinforced sheet molding compound (SMC) composite

Xuze Sun et al.

Summary: The quasi-static and fatigue behavior of chopped glass fiber reinforced sheet molding compound composite were investigated in this study. The fiber orientation within specimens was analyzed using X-ray Computerized Tomography (XCT), and the strain distribution was recorded by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system. Quasi-static tensile and compressive tests were conducted, and the fatigue behavior was evaluated under different loading conditions. A modeling method based on Representative Volume Element (RVE) was modified and applied to predict the fatigue behavior.

Fatigue failure mechanism analysis and life prediction of short fiber reinforced polymer composites under tension-tension loading

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel micromechanical fatigue model for precisely explaining the fatigue failure mechanism and predicting the fatigue life of SFRP composites. Through numerical analysis and experimental verification, the results show that the progressive fatigue damage of each constituent can be quantitatively analyzed, and the S-N data of SFRP can be well predicted, which can improve the durability of SFRP components.

Determination of Fatigue Damage Initiation in Short Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic through Acoustic Emission Analysis

Janna Krummenacker et al.

Summary: This study investigates the initiation of damage in short glass fiber-reinforced polyamide 6.6 under fatigue loading using acoustic emission analysis. An optimized specimen geometry was developed to meet specific testing requirements and enable further micromechanical studies. The research identified a stress threshold for damage initiation and estimated the lifetime of the material based on tension-tension fatigue tests and the SN curve.

Summary: This study investigates the stiffness degradation of short-fiber reinforced thermoplastics under high-cycle fatigue loading using a simple isotropic fatigue-damage model. The research focuses on the influence of numerical and material parameters on effective stiffness degradation, as well as the dependence on geometric parameters of the composite material. A model-order reduction strategy is used for component-scale simulations.

Enabling rapid fatigue life prediction of short carbon fiber reinforced polyether-ether-ketone using a novel energy dissipation-based model

Aijia Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy dissipation behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyether-ether-ketone (SCFRPEEK) under fatigue loading. A new model combining thermodynamic laws and fatigue damage mechanisms was established to predict the fatigue limit and S-N curve for SCFR-PEEK. By monitoring temperature distribution evolution using an infrared camera during fatigue tests, energy dissipated during the tests was calculated based on local thermodynamic differential equations. Through analysis of different sources of intrinsic dissipation and their correlation to fatigue damage, the model successfully estimated fatigue properties of SCFR-PEEK with a goodness of fit of 0.964.

Summary: This paper proposes a critical plane-based fatigue damage model for predicting tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue life of short glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, considering fiber orientation and mean stress effects. The model also includes temperature and frequency effects, and comparisons are made with experimental data to validate and analyze the model predictions.
