Amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of all-composite sandwich plates with a foam-filled hexagon honeycomb core

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of all-composite sandwich (ACS) plates with a hexagon honeycomb core (HHC) filled by soft foam (SF) are investigated. The solutions of nonlinear fundamental frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios of HHC-SF-ACS plates are obtained theoretically. It is found that increasing the Young's or shear moduli of foam material and the filling ratio of SF can improve the damping property of the composite plates significantly.

Free vibration analyses of composite sandwich cylindrical shells with grid cores: experimental study and numerical simulation

Davoud Shahgholian-Ghahfarokhi et al.

Summary: This article investigates the free vibration analysis of composite sandwich cylindrical shells with grid cores through experimental and numerical methods. The experimental aspect involves the design and fabrication of specimens using a new silicone rubber mold and filament winding setup. Modal testing is performed and natural frequencies are extracted. A 3D finite element model is constructed for validation. The comparison between experimental and numerical results demonstrates good agreement. Additionally, a parametric study examines the influence of outer and inner skin thicknesses, rib thickness, ribs' number, skin fiber angle, and boundary conditions on the natural frequency. Lastly, the sandwich shells are compared to both unstiffened and stiffened shells, revealing significant differences in natural frequencies.

Shock resistance of elastomer-strengthened metallic corrugated core sandwich panels

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the effect of polyurea coating on the shock resistance of fully-clamped metallic corrugated core sandwich panels against high-velocity aluminum foam projectile impact. The results show that the presence of polyurea coating helps reduce permanent deflection and prevent shear failure. The benefits of polyurea coating in mitigating impact deformation remain stable regardless of the projectile momentum, and thicker, larger, and impact-side coating is preferred. The improved performance is mainly attributed to enhanced plastic bending moment and membrane force in the polyurea-coated sandwich panel.

Summary: Fluted-core sandwich composites offer great potential in lightweight engineering applications. This study designed and fabricated trapezoidal fluted-core sandwich composite cylinders made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics to improve deformation stability. The effects of circumferential cell number and wall thickness on bearing characteristics and failure mechanism were assessed. The results showed that increasing cell number and wall thickness could improve critical local buckling load and enhance specific buckling load.

Summary: The present study investigates the buckling analysis of joined composite sandwich conical-cylindrical shells with reinforced lattice core subjected to external pressure. The stiffness parameters of the lattice core are determined using an effective smeared technique and combined with those of the skins. The theoretical formulation is based on first-shear deformation theory and continuity conditions. A highly accurate solution for evaluating the buckling load is provided using power series technique. Finite element analysis is performed to validate the analytical model, and the influence of important design variables on buckling characteristics is investigated.

Summary: In this study, the impact and vibration response characteristics of fiber reinforced polymer sandwich plates with a foam core reinforced by chopped fiber rods are investigated. A dynamic model is proposed to predict the vibro-impact characteristics of the structures. The model is validated through experiments, and the results show that adding fiber reinforcement can reduce the vibro-impact response. The study also suggests that adjusting geometric and material parameters can further reduce the vibration response.
