Influence of Low and Extreme Heat Fluxes on Thermal Degradation of Carbon Fibre-reinforced Polymers

Johannes Bibinger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal degradation of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) under different irradiation scenarios. It shows that when exposed to high heat flux, CFRP experiences significant damage and loss of mechanical properties. However, the use of coatings can delay the thermal degradation of CFRP.

Meso-structure-based thermomechanical modelling of thermoplastic-based laminates subjected to combined mechanical loading and severe thermal gradients

Yann Carpier et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical modelling methodology to investigate the thermo-mechanics of carbon reinforced thermoplastic-based laminates in the situation of mechanical loading combined to thermal gradients. It discusses the influence of heterogeneous matrix thermal degradation on the macro-scale thermal dependent properties of the composite. The developed model provides good predictions of the laminate's stiffness evolution according to temperature up to the onset of thermal decomposition temperature.

Fire behaviour of composite materials using kerosene burner tests at small-scales

Eliot Schuhler et al.

Summary: A burner was designed for testing the fire behavior of composites used in the aeronautic field, with infrared camera used to measure rear face temperature during tests. An original method was developed to determine the convective coefficient of the flame on composite samples and the contribution of the radiative part of the total heat flux.

Predicting Delaminations and Residual Strength of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) After One-Sided Thermal Loading by Means of Infrared Spectroscopy

Tanja Marina Vetter et al.

Summary: This study investigates the change of chemical, structural, and mechanical properties of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) after one-sided thermal loading. Structural properties in the form of developing delaminations are mainly responsible for the loss of strength, which can be reliably predicted by IR spectroscopy post thermal loading. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is used to predict the presence of delaminations.

Experiments based analysis of thermal decomposition kinetics model. Case of carbon fibers PolyPhenylene Sulfide composites

Y. Carpier et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the most relevant approach to model the isothermal decomposition of C/PPS composites, with experimental databases obtained from TGA and MT-TGA tests. Three different modeling approaches were discussed, with model-fitting methods providing relatively accurate predictions of TGA curves. The model-free approach was identified as the most physically relevant method for capturing the thermal decomposition of C/PPS composites under isothermal conditions.
