Interlaminar fracture and crack-healing capability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites toughened with 3D-printed poly-ε-caprolactone grid structures

Bertan Beylergil

Summary: In this study, carbon fiber/epoxy composites were toughened using 3D-printed PCL grid structures, enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal healing efficiency of the composites. The addition of PCL interlayers significantly improved the Mode-I fracture toughness, but also led to a decrease in flexural properties. The results provide insights into the relationship between the amount of PCL and the enhancement of performance in these composites.

On mode-I and mode-II interlaminar crack migration and R-curves in carbon/epoxy laminates with hybrid toughening via core-shell rubber particles and thermoplastic micro-fibre veils

Mehmet Cagatay Akbolat et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of hybrid toughening on carbon fiber/epoxy laminates, and finds that hybrid toughening significantly enhances fracture energy and R-curve behavior by intrinsic and extrinsic toughening mechanisms. Fractography analysis shows that hybrid toughening can constrain crack propagation and absorb more energy.

On the R-curve behaviour of carbon/epoxy laminates with core-shell rubber nanoparticle and micro-fibre veil hybrid toughening: Carbon vs PPS veils

Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of core-shell rubber nanoparticles and non-woven microfibre veils on the delamination resistance and crack migration in carbon fibre/epoxy laminates. The results show that the combination of these two toughening methods significantly enhances the fracture energies under mode-I and mode-II conditions and affects micro-failure mechanisms and crack paths.
