Enhancement of tensile strength of tapered laminates by utilizing thin-ply composites

Xiawan Hua et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of tapered laminates without belt plies with different taper ratios and ply thickness under the loading-unloading tensile test was studied. The damage behavior of the specimens was observed through microscope imaging after the unloading process. The results show that tapered laminates utilizing thin-ply composites have excellent mechanical properties and damage-resistant capability, allowing for a wider range of taper ratios in the design of tapered composite structures and enabling lightweight.

Delamination suppression in tapered unidirectional laminates with multiple ply drops using a tape scarfing technique

Tharan Gordon et al.

Summary: Composite laminate thickness tapering is crucial for weight efficient structures. A novel tape scarfing method was used to apply a tapered profile to dropped ply ends in this study, showing that scarfing can completely suppress delamination in certain configurations, with retained higher performance.
