Compressive failure strain of unidirectional carbon fibre composites from bending tests

Xun Wu et al.

Summary: One of the major difficulties in determining the compressive strengths of composites is the stress concentration and strain gradient effect. In this study, unconventional flexural tests were conducted on carbon fibre/wood sandwich and monolithic composite beams to obtain reliable compressive failure strains. The results showed high values and low variability, with the compressive strain of IM7/8552 material being 1.36% higher than previously published values and only 3% variability. Additionally, the strain gradient effect on compressive failure strain was analyzed for the first time using different wood core depths, with the effect decreasing with increased beam thickness.

Detection of Barely Visible Impact Damage in Polymeric Laminated Composites Using a Biomimetic Tactile Whisker

Sakineh Fotouhi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the detection of barely visible impact damage (BVID) in composite materials using tactile whisker sensors similar to rat whiskers. The experiments show that BVID cannot be visually detected, but can be identified through ultrasonic C-scan observations, with the damage size increasing with higher impact energy levels. The data collected from whisker sensors can be classified accurately using a support vector machine classifier after training, offering a new and reliable BVID detection technique with potential for automation.
