Influences of ply waviness and discontinuity on automated fibre placement manufactured grid stiffeners

Summary: This study reveals that the structural efficiency of grid stiffener can be significantly improved by introducing discontinuous plies at the intersection. Finite element analysis and experimental results demonstrate that an appropriate ratio of discontinuous plies can enhance the performance of grid stiffener, providing insights into failure mechanisms.

Porosity in multi-axis material extrusion of short-fibre composites

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between part porosity and mechanical properties of short-fibre reinforced polylactic acid printed via multi-axis material extrusion (MAMEX) to establish guidelines for optimal process configurations. Findings show that some commercial brands of short-fibre reinforced filament have inherent porosity that weakens the mechanical behaviour of MAMEX components. The study suggests that improving printing strategies and filament properties can enhance mechanical performance of MAMEX parts.
