Micromechanical study of multiple transverse cracking in cross-ply fiber-reinforced laminates

Reza Sepasdar et al.

Summary: This study uses a nonlinear cohesive interface-enriched generalized finite element method, along with elastic, elasto-plastic damage model, and cohesive zone model, to investigate the effects of transverse crack density, delamination, and intra-ply stress redistribution on the performance of composite laminates. The developed framework is validated against experimental results and the correlation between different stages of failure and the studied parameters is discussed.

The scale effect in composites: An explanation physically based on the different mechanisms of damage involved in failure

F. Paris et al.

Summary: The scale effect in composites is influenced by the thickness of the lamina, affecting the strength of the laminate. This study provides a physically based explanation of the scale effect by identifying two different failure mechanisms, progressive and explosive, in the 90-degree lamina. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for identifying the parameters involved in failure initiation.

An experimental investigation on damage mechanisms of thick hybrid composite structures under flexural loading using multi-instrument measurements

S. Gul et al.

Summary: In this study, damage characterization of thick carbon/glass fiber reinforced hybrid composites is performed under flexural loading conditions via two non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, i.e., digital image correlation (DIC) and acoustic emission (AE). Experimental results reveal that the flexural modulus is correlated with the location of carbon fiber plies, while flexural strength depends on the type and extent of damage initiation. Interply hybridization improves mechanical properties and failure predictability, and DIC efficiently captures strain associated with failure modes. AE results indicate a correlation between strain levels and failure in the carbon fiber plies, and observations on thick hybrid laminates are confirmed with optical fractography, highlighting the impact of lay-up sequence and laminate thickness on mechanical performance and damage mechanisms.
