Cyclic compression behaviour of multilayered nanostructured foams: Numerical meso scale modelling and experimental validation

Gutierrez Montero Ignacio et al.

Summary: The mechanical fatigue behavior of a complex porous and hierarchical structure is investigated using experimental and numerical approaches. A numerical model considering the geometric structure and constitutive behavior is developed, and a Representative Volume Element model at the mesoscale is used to characterize the foam. The overall response of the system is validated and calibrated through quasi-static and fatigue compression tests. The mesoscale model is employed to simulate the compression mechanism, structure buckling, and energy dissipation of the hierarchical composite foams.

Dynamic response of polyurethane foam and fiber orthogonal corrugated sandwich structure subjected to low-velocity impact

Yuezhao Pang et al.

Summary: This study prepared two types of foam/fiber sandwich structures using the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process and conducted low-velocity impact tests to investigate their force response, specific energy absorption, and failure modes under different impact energies, hammer shapes, and impact positions. The results showed that the corrugated sandwich structure exhibited superior low-velocity impact resistance compared to the flat sandwich structure, and performed best when impacted at the corrugated trough position.

Impact properties of uniaxially thermoformed auxetic foams

Qicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study describes large strain quasi-static and impact tests of a new class of low-cost uniaxially thermoformed transverse isotropic auxetic foams. The results show that these foams only exhibit auxetic behavior when loaded along the transverse direction to the uniaxial thermoforming compression. The impact energy absorption performance of the foams is enhanced, and the Poisson's ratio approaches 0 at large strains.

A dynamic poroelastic model for auxetic polyurethane foams involving viscoelasticity and pneumatic damping effects in the linear regime

Qicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new dynamic poroelastic model to describe the vibration transmissibility of auxetic polyurethane (PU) foams. Experimental tests and data regression are conducted to determine the permeability and viscoelasticity of the foams, and it is found that different foams have different moduli along different directions.

Topological characteristics and mechanical properties of uniaxially thermoformed auxetic foam

Qicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presents a simplified procedure for manufacturing auxetic PU foam using a single direction thermoforming compression process on conventional open cell foam samples. Auxetic foams exhibit transverse isotropy with specific compression ratios required to achieve auxeticity. Numerical models built from 3D scans show good agreement with experimental data and help explain deformation mechanisms of auxetic foams.
