Numerical cross-scale optimization of homogenized composite laminates under impact loading

Shengya Li et al.

Summary: A concurrent optimization procedure is presented for optimizing the micro and macro structure layout of composite laminates under low-velocity impact. Homogenization analysis is carried out to calculate the effective material properties of the microstructures, and a surrogate model is used to establish the relationship between macrostructure performance and micro materials & macro structure parameters. Parametric analysis based on the surrogate model reveals the effect of various parameters on the energy absorption and deformation resistance performances of CFRP composite laminates. The main novelty lies in providing a concurrent optimization procedure for microscopic material parameters as well as macrostructural parameters.

Low-velocity impact resistance behaviors of bionic double-helicoidal composite laminates

Yabin Deng et al.

Summary: To improve low-velocity impact resistance, a bionic double-helicoidal composite laminate (BDHCL) mimicking coelacanth scales micro-structure is proposed. The BDHCL consists of two adjacent collagen layers arranged into an orthogonal bilayer and rotating at a small helix angle. Three types of helicoidal configurations with different derivatives are designed. The impact resistance of ERA laminate shows the greatest improvement among the three types, and a certain included angle of bilayer exhibits excellent impact resistance.

Validation of Extension-Bending and Extension-Twisting Coupled Laminates in Elastic Element

Katarzyna Falkowicz

Summary: The article discusses the design of the stacking sequence in composite plate elements to achieve desired behavior in the postcritical range. CFRP laminates with different layer arrangements were tested under axial compression. Specifically chosen configurations were studied to determine the influence of Extension-Twisting and Extension-Bending coupled designs under axial load. A parametric study was conducted to analyze the influence of layer arrangement on posbuckling behavior. Matlab software and a script developed by the author were used for calculating the components of the ABD matrix. Experimental validation and numerical analysis were also performed.

Compression-after-impact effect on postbuckling behavior of thermoplastic composite laminated plates

Taoye Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the postbuckling behavior of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite laminated plates under uni-axial compression-after-impact and proposes a physical model that considers both internal damage and local geometric imperfection caused by impact. Experimental data is compared with finite element numerical results to validate the method. The numerical results show that initial geometric imperfection, impact point position, plate width-to-thickness ratio, and boundary conditions significantly influence the postbuckling load-deflection curves of the laminated plates under CAI.

Design optimization of bioinspired helicoidal CFRPP/GFRPP hybrid composites for multiple low-velocity impact loads

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the low-velocity impact characteristics and design optimization of hybrid continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics. Experimental characterization and finite element analysis were performed on carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene (CFRPP) and glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (GFRPP) composites. The results showed that helicoidal stacking configuration can enhance the low-velocity impact resistances for both CFRPP and GFRPP specimens. Multiobjective optimization was used to optimize material cost and impact resistance, resulting in a significant increase in peak energy absorption and a reduction in material cost compared to the baseline design.

Analyses of thermal buckling and secondary instability of post-buckled S-FGM plates with porosities based on a meshfree method

Chang Tao et al.

Summary: This research investigates the thermal buckling and postbuckling behaviors of sigmoid functionally graded material (S-FGM) plates with porosities resting on an elastic foundation using the third-order shear deformation theory and the von Karman large deflection assumption. The study focuses on the secondary instability that occurs during the postbuckling regime, and examines the transitions of deflection shapes under different boundary conditions. Numerical analysis is conducted using a displacement control strategy and a meshfree radial point interpolation method, with comparisons made to verify the convergence and accuracy of the method. The study also explores the impact of functionally graded index, porosity coefficient, and elastic foundation parameters on the thermal buckling behavior and secondary instability during the postbuckling regime.

Toughening mechanism of coelacanth-fish-inspired double-helicoidal composites

Sha Yin et al.

Summary: Inspired by the double-helicoidal structure of coelacanth fish scales, engineering composite materials with enhanced toughness were designed and fabricated in this study. The double-helicoidal composites exhibited higher dynamic energy absorption and more complex failure modes compared to single-helicoidal counterparts, allowing for greater design flexibility without being sensitive to fiber orientations. Additionally, interlaminar stresses were found to be responsible for delamination in the double-helicoidal composites. These findings contribute to the development of next-generation impact-resistant composite materials.

Insights into the high-velocity impact behaviour of bio-inspired composite laminates with helicoidal lay-ups

Hongxu Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that helicoidal laminates with small rotation angles had inferior perforation resistance and energy absorption capacity compared to quasi-isotropic and cross-ply counterparts. Cross-ply configuration was identified as the optimal fiber architecture for impact perforation. The number of fractured fibers decreased with a decrease in inter-ply angle, due to the promotion of a wedge-in mechanism by small rotation angles.
