Probability embedded failure prediction of unidirectional composites under biaxial loadings combining machine learning and micromechanical modelling

Lei Wan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a probability embedded approach for predicting the failure of IM7/8552 unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials under biaxial stress states. The approach combines micromechanical modelling, artificial neural networks (ANNs), and uncertainty quantification. The ANN models show excellent performance in regression and classification problems, achieving low mean square error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) for regression, and high prediction probability for classification. The failure strength predicted by the ANNs is in good agreement with the theoretically predicted failure envelopes.

Microstructure and flexural strength of C/HfC-ZrC-SiC composites prepared by reactive melt infiltration method

Sijie Kou et al.

Summary: C/HfC-ZrC-SiC composites were fabricated using reactive melt infiltration (RMI) of mixed HfSi2 and ZrSi2 alloys. The microstructure, infiltration behavior, and flexural strength of the composites were studied. The composites exhibited compositional segregation, with different phases distributed in the exterior and interior regions. A model for the reactive melt infiltration process was established, and the C/HfC-ZrC-SiC composites showed higher flexural strength compared to other composites prepared by the same process.

Asymptotic homogenization approach for anisotropic micropolar modeling of periodic Cauchy materials

Andrea Bacigalupo et al.

Summary: A micropolar-based asymptotic homogenization approach is proposed for analyzing composite materials with periodic microstructure. The macro descriptors are consistently derived and shown to be directly related to perturbation functions and micropolar two-dimensional deformation modes. An energy equivalence concept is introduced to derive the consistent overall micropolar constitutive tensors.

Novel one-step formed composite reinforcement of Spider web like SiCnw networks and Z-pins like SiC rods for ablation resistance improvement of C/C-ZrC-SiC

Tian Tian et al.

Summary: The novel composite reinforcement with horizontal multilayer Spider web like SiC nanowire networks and vertical interconnected Z-pins like SiC rods significantly improves the ablation resistance of C/C-ZrC-SiC composites, attributed to a denser gradient oxide layer generated under the initial sticky net effect from SiCnw networks and subsequent oxide compensation from Z-pins like SiC rods.

Analytical Solution of Thermo-Mechanical Properties of Functionally Graded Materials by Asymptotic Homogenization Method

Dan Chen et al.

Summary: This work examines a general mathematical model for functionally graded heterogeneous equilibrium boundary value problems, and presents a methodology for finding the local problems and effective properties of functionally graded materials using the asymptotic homogenization method. The research is of great reference significance for future material optimization design.

Pitch resin addition induced evolution of composition, microstructure and mechanical property of C/C-SiC-ZrC composites

Jinjin Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, high ZrC content pure ZrC-SiC and C/C-SiC-ZrC composites were successfully prepared by directly adding resin into the mixture solution of PZC and PCS to supply extra carbon. The addition of resin effectively alleviated the degradation of PyC and Cf during pyrolysis, improving the mechanical properties of the composites.
