A seven-parameter high-order finite element model for multi-stable analysis of variable stiffness laminated shells

Tianyun He et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an accurate and efficient model for stability analysis of variable angle fiber laminated shells. The model accurately characterizes the large deformation using a seven-parameter shell formulation with Equivalent Single Layer theory and adopts the spectral/hp element with high-order polynomial basis functions for discretization. By comparison with ABAQUS solutions, the proposed model shows to be efficient and accurate for predicting the buckling, snap-through, and tristability behaviors of variable angle fiber laminates under various conditions. Furthermore, variable angle fiber shells provide more design possibilities than straight fiber shells by controlling the stable states and obtaining multiple stable configurations.

Free vibration analysis of composite laminated beams with curvilinear fibers via refined theories

Behnam Daraei et al.

Summary: In this article, free vibration finite element analysis of variable stiffness composite laminate beams is conducted using Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) based on higher-order theories. The variable stiffness of laminated beams is achieved by using curvilinear fibers instead of straight fibers. The Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) model, which considers multiple unknown variables, is employed. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effect of fiber orientation angle and various boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of VSCL beams.

Free vibration analysis of variable stiffness laminated composite beams

Z. Kheladi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the free vibration analysis of composite laminated beams reinforced with parabolic fibers using the equivalent single layer theory (ESLT) and isogeometric analysis method. A new isogeometric composite beam element is developed and used to find natural frequencies of variable stiffness composites beams with parabolic fibers. Parametric study is presented to investigate the impact of various factors on the natural frequencies of the variable stiffness composite beams.

Free vibration analysis of variable stiffness composite laminated beams and plates by novel hierarchical differential quadrature finite elements

Yang Yan et al.

Summary: This work investigates the free vibration behavior of variable stiffness composite laminates (VSCLs) using the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) and weak form differential quadrature finite element method (DQFEM). The novel solutions proposed in the research allow for more robust formulations of Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and Layer-Wise (LW) models, with accuracy and effectiveness validated through numerical examples and comparison to published data.

A mixed inverse differential quadrature method for static analysis of constant- and variable-stiffness laminated beams based on Hellinger-Reissner mixed variational formulation

Luan C. Trinh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mixed inverse differential quadrature method to solve the governing fourth-order differential equations for bending and stretching of laminated beams. By approximating the first derivatives of functional unknowns, the order of differentiation being performed is reduced, resulting in reduced errors.

Free vibration analysis of curved metallic and composite beam structures using a novel variable-kinematic DQ method

Yang Yan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the 3D free vibration behavior of curved metallic and composite beams using a novel beam theory constructed within the framework of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). A set of improved hierarchical Legendre polynomials is used to describe the cross-sectional deformation, allowing for efficient computation and consistent convergence properties. The differential quadrature based-meshless method is employed for the approximate solution of governing equations, showing optimized computational efficiency over 3D finite element methods.

Efficient three-dimensional geometrically nonlinear analysis of variable stiffness composite beams using strong Unified Formulation

S. O. Ojo et al.

Summary: The use of composite laminates, particularly with variable stiffness designs, is increasing for advanced structural applications. A new geometrically nonlinear strong Unified Formulation (SUF) for 3D stress analysis of such composite structures shows improved computational efficiency and enhanced structural response. Predictions from the SUF method compare well with existing literature and ABAQUS 3D finite element models, demonstrating the potential benefits of variable stiffness properties in achieving superior structural performance.
