Surface Modification of Polypropylene Mesh with a Porcine Cholecystic Extracellular Matrix Hydrogel for Mitigating Host Tissue Reaction

Summary: Polypropylene (PP) meshes are commonly used for repairing skeletal muscle defects, but can lead to undesirable tissue reactions. This study explored a tissue engineering approach of dip-coating the mesh with a hydrogel formulation of porcine cholecystic extracellular matrix (CECM) to mitigate these reactions. The C-PP mesh showed improved biocompatibility compared to commercial PP hernia repair grafts, indicating the potential of CECM hydrogel as a biomaterial for surface modification of polymeric biomedical devices.
