Insights into human kidney function from the study of Drosophila

Sybille Koehler et al.

Summary: Biological and biomedical research using fruit flies as a model organism has been highly recognized and even awarded with several Nobel prizes. The advantages of fruit flies over other in vivo models, such as short life cycle, easy and inexpensive animal maintenance, and availability of various transgenic strains and tools, make them a preferred choice. Additionally, fruit flies have a high degree of conservation with human genes, providing valuable insights into human diseases. This article specifically focuses on the use of fruit flies in nephrology research, highlighting the significance of studying kidney tissues and the potential of nephrocytes in understanding inter-organ communication and kidney function.

Drosophila melanogaster: a simple genetic model of kidney structure, function and disease

Julian A. T. Dow et al.

Summary: The fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster serves as a suitable and cost-effective model for studying kidney diseases. It has advantages such as easy maintenance, availability of genetic mutants and powerful transgenic technologies. Various tissues in Drosophila melanogaster are involved in renal and excretory functions, allowing investigation of epithelial transport, kidney stone formation, and diseases associated with specific genes. The fly model provides insights into the mechanisms of kidney disease.

Single and combined effect of bisphenol A with high sucrose diet on the diabetic and renal tubular dysfunction phenotypes in Drosophila melanogaster

Lavi Rani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure and combined exposure of BPA + HSD on glucose homeostasis and renal complications in Drosophila. The results show that exposure to 1.0 mM BPA alone induces type 2 diabetes-like condition in adult male Drosophila, while combined exposure of BPA + HSD aggravates the severity of diabetes and renal tubular dysfunction. This study suggests the use of Drosophila model to study environmental chemical-induced diabetes-mediated renal dysfunction.

Heavy metal associated health hazards: An interplay of oxidative stress and signal transduction

Jagdish Gopal Paithankar et al.

Summary: The oxidative stress induced by heavy metals and its connection with different signaling pathways are complex, which may lead to a variety of health issues. Exposure to heavy metals/metalloids such as Arsenic, Chromium, Cadmium, and Lead can trigger oxidative stress and subsequently cellular and organismal responses, involving regulation of multiple signaling pathways.
