Synergistic interactions of thermodiffusive instabilities and turbulence in lean hydrogen flames

Lukas Berger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between thermodiffusive instabilities and turbulence through large-scale Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The results show that thermodiffusively unstable flames in turbulent flows lead to a significant increase in flame speed and higher fuel consumption rates per flame surface area.

Reactive computational fluid dynamics modelling of methane-hydrogen admixtures in internal combustion engines: Part I - RANS

Jann Koch et al.

Summary: This article investigates the effects of hydrogen addition to methane on a spark ignited single cylinder engine, proposing a modeling approach for further understanding the processes involved. Experimental data from tests on a single-cylinder spark-ignition engine is used to validate the proposed reactive computational fluid dynamics modeling approach. The introduced submodels lead to significant improvement in in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate evolution across various operating conditions.

Curvature effects on NO formation in wrinkled laminar ammonia/hydrogen/nitrogen-air premixed flames

Corinna Netzer et al.

Summary: The study reveals the impact of flame curvature and preferential diffusion of H2 on local equivalence ratio, which in turn affects NO formation in NH3/H2/N2-air flames. The formation of NO is found to be influenced by local equivalence ratio and radical pools, with differences between H2-depleted and H2-enriched regions of the flame front across a wide range of equivalence ratios.

A comparison of the blow-out behavior of turbulent premixed ammonia/hydrogen/nitrogen-air and methane-air flames

Samuel Wiseman et al.

Summary: Ammonia, hydrogen, and nitrogen blends show potential as fuel in gas turbines with blow-out velocity higher than methane. Experimental results indicate that ammonia blends have higher heat release rate and lower extinction tendency in high-speed turbulent conditions than methane.

2-D and 3-D measurements of flame stretch and turbulence-flame interactions in turbulent premixed flames using DNS

Haiou Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed models to estimate 3-D statistics of flame stretch-related quantities by correcting 2-D measurements using direct numerical simulation data. Results show that mean shear mainly influences flame orientations but does not qualitatively change flame stretch and turbulence-flame interactions. Two-dimensional measurements properly capture trends of 3-D results.

A weakly nonlinear analytical model for the transversely forced flame describing function of a slit flame

Tengyu Liu et al.

Summary: In this work, a weakly nonlinear analytical model of the flame describing function for a two-dimensional laminar premixed slit flame subjected to both transverse perturbations and two-dimensional mean flows was proposed. The effects of transverse oncoming velocity convection models on the flame tip movements and nonlinear FDFs were investigated. The study showed that transverse oncoming velocity convection models have a significant impact on the flame dynamics and FDFs, especially at low frequencies.

The effect of hydrogen enrichment on the forced response of CH4/H2/Air laminar flames

Zhengli Lim et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-enrichment shifts the FDF gain drop-off to higher frequencies, increasing propensity to thermoacoustic instability and reducing the effective flame time delay. Sensitivity analyses showed that changes in FDF were predominantly driven by flame burning speed and insensitive to changes in Markstein length.
