Combustion and flame position impacts on shear layer dynamics in a reacting jet in cross-flow

Vedanth Nair et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the dynamics and controlling physics of reacting jets in cross-flow (RJICF), considering the effects of flame/shear layer offset, momentum flux ratio (J), and density ratio (S). The results show that the behavior of non-reacting and reacting cases can be similar or completely different, depending on the position of the flame relative to the shear layer. The growth rates of shear layer vortex (SLV) structures increase with decreasing density ratio for non-reacting cases, and similar dependencies are observed for reacting cases when the flame is outside the shear layer. However, in these reacting cases, the SLV growth rates are lower but ultimately reach similar peak strengths as in the non-reacting cases. The decay rate of SLV structures in both non-reacting and reacting cases scales inversely with the initial growth rate, indicating that primarily inertial mechanisms govern the SLV dynamics. However, reacting cases where the flame lies inside the shear layer exhibit completely different behavior, with the entire jet column undulating over a long length scale. The relative roles of inertial and viscous mechanisms in controlling combustion influences on the SLV dynamics change significantly with shear layer-flame offset.

Large Eddy Simulation of a Reacting Kerosene Spray in Hot Vitiated Cross-Flow

Daniel Fredrich et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evaporation and combustion characteristics of a kerosene spray injected into a cross-flow of high-temperature vitiated air. The results provide fundamental understanding for the development of low-emission combustion technologies, particularly in the field of aeronautical combustors. Large eddy simulations are used to study the spray evolution and reaction zone characteristics, and the results demonstrate the feasibility of applying this method for investigating reacting aviation fuel sprays in hot vitiated cross-flow.

Flame dynamics in the lean burnout zone of an RQL combustion chamber-response to primary zone velocity fluctuations

Julian Renner et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flame dynamics of the lean burnout zone of an RQL combustion chamber using a spatially separated experimental approach. The findings show that there is no thermoacoustic interaction and the flame in the burnout zone reacts to low frequency fluctuations. Acoustic measurement methods and high-speed camera imaging are used to analyze and visualize the flame dynamics.

Simulation of the Self-Ignition of a Cold Premixed Ethylene-Air Jet in Hot Vitiated Crossflow

Roberto Solana-Perez et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the self-ignition of a jet flame in a hot vitiated cross flow using Large Eddy Simulation with analytically reduced chemistry. The study shows that self-ignition occurs in very lean fuel concentration regions, which grow from reacting patches in the windward jet mixing layer. Chemical explosive mode analysis is used to identify the chemically active regions that precede the spontaneous ignition.

Summary: The ultralow emission combustor concept based on flameless oxidation demonstrates the potential for achieving clean and efficient combustion of aviation kerosene. It shows soot-free and single-digit NOx levels under atmospheric conditions, attributed to a unique combustor mixing configuration. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations, providing further insights into mixing and air dilution effects on emissions and combustion completeness.
