Oxidative Stress and Immune Response in Melanoma: Ion Channels as Targets of Therapy

Alessia Remigante et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress and immune response are important factors in the development of cancers, including melanoma. Ion channels, which are aberrantly expressed in tumor cells, play a role in neoplastic transformation, malignant progression, and resistance to therapy. These ion channels, located in cellular membranes, are targets of oxidative stress, which is particularly elevated in melanoma. They also represent promising targets for therapeutic intervention in melanoma.

Regulatory T cell and macrophage crosstalk in acute lung injury: future perspectives

Tianshu Guan et al.

Summary: Acute lung injury (ALI) is the damage to endothelial cells in the lungs and associated vessels caused by various factors. ALI accompanied by inflammation and thrombosis has been reported as a common complication of SARS-COV-2 infection. Inflammation and the cytokine storm are widely accepted as the main causes of ALI. Recent studies have suggested a possible interaction between regulatory T cells (Tregs) and M2 macrophages, two anti-inflammatory cell types, in the pathogenesis of ALI. This review discusses the current understanding of ALI pathogenesis and the role of Tregs and macrophages, especially focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying their crosstalk. Understanding the role of Tregs and macrophages can potentially lead to new treatment targets for ALI.

Summary: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative pathogen of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), which can lead to severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Dysregulated and hyperactivated immune response may trigger the deleterious cytokine storm in COVID-19. Multiple studies aim to find immunomodulators and develop vaccines to rebalance the immune response and limit the dangerous effects of the virus.

Remodeling liver microenvironment by L-arginine loaded hollow polydopamine nanoparticles for liver cirrhosis treatment

Yeying Wang et al.

Summary: Liver cirrhosis is a liver disease with a high mortality rate worldwide. Antifibrotic drugs are commonly used clinically, but there are still many challenges. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the liver lesions microenvironment is an important factor leading to the development of liver cirrhosis. Therefore, a nanomedicine-mediated antioxidant therapy can remodel the liver microenvironment and reverse the process of cirrhosis.

Key Role of Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Interaction with Macrophages in Promoting Repair of Lung Injury

Mirjana Jerkic et al.

Summary: Lung macrophages play a crucial role in pulmonary innate immunity and host defense. The interaction between these macrophages and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has shown potential in treating inflammatory lung diseases and COVID-19. The lung microenvironment facilitates the secretion of factors by MSCs, leading to polarization of macrophages towards an immunosuppressive M2-like phenotype for tissue repair. In turn, M2-like macrophages can affect the immune regulatory function and tissue reparatory effects of MSCs.
