Demulsification of W/O emulsions using highly branched polymer demulsifier with 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate as centronucleus

Zejun Zhang et al.

Summary: A highly branched PNDC demulsifier with 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate as centronucleus was prepared using an efficient one-pot strategy. The demulsification efficiency (DE) was investigated by bottle test, and the optimal DE of 94.63% was achieved with a PNDC concentration of 100 mg/L, settling time of 60 min, and operating temperature of 70?. The DE could still reach 91.58% even with a concentration of only 20 mg/L under the same conditions. PNDC exhibited excellent performance in W/O emulsions at extremely low concentrations and wide pH range (4-12) and high salinities, showing good salt, acid and alkaline tolerance. Additionally, interfacial tension (IFT), surface tension (SFT), elastic modulus, and micrograph analysis were carried out to explore the possible mechanism.

Effect of salinity on the characteristics, pH-triggered demulsification and rheology of crude oil/water nanoemulsions

Sagheer A. Onaizi

Summary: This study presents the formulation of highly stable crude oil-in-water nanoemulsions with different salinity levels and investigates the impact of salt concentration on the properties of nanoemulsions. The increase in salinity resulted in higher emulsion stability and viscosity, as well as changes in droplet size and distribution. The presence of NaCl also enhanced the demulsification of stable nanoemulsions through pH alteration, with an interesting observation of changing flow behavior with shear rate and disappearance of shear-thickening behavior at a certain salt concentration.

Dynamic interfacial tensions of sulfobetaine and polymers solutions: Effect of structures

Hai-tao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interfacial tensions (IFTs) between different betaine solutions and decane using polymers, hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) and hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide (HMPAM), and explores the effects of oleic acid on betaine-polymer systems. The results show that HPAM forms a mixed adsorption film with alkyl sulfobetaine (ASB) molecules, while HMPAM forms mixed micelle-like interfacial associations with ASB, leading to changes in IFTs. The addition of oleic acid decreases IFTs significantly, especially in the branched xylyl substituted alkyl sulfobetaine (BSB) system. This research provides insights for the design of effective chemical flooding systems.

Revealing the non-covalent interactions between oxygen-containing demulsifiers and interfacially active asphaltenes: A multi-level computational simulation

Changqing He et al.

Summary: Non-covalent interactions dominate the process of demulsification, and a hierarchical-three-level method combining density functional theory (DFT) simulation is proposed to study the non-covalent interactions between a demulsifier and asphaltenes. The demulsifier molecules break emulsions through electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion effects. A new solvent model is proposed for the oil-water interface system. This research provides insights for the development of new functional demulsifiers based on structural characteristics and non-covalent interactions.
