NIR light-triggered core-coalescence of double-emulsion drops for micro-reactions

Xugen Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a non-contact strategy for continuously triggering core-coalescence of microfluidic generated double-emulsion drops (DEDs) with multiple-core using near-infrared (NIR) light. The experiments show that under NIR light irradiation, the inner core droplets containing prussian blue (PB) heat up and cavitate, breaking the interfacial equilibrium between two inner cores. The efficiency of continuous core-coalescence in DEDs can reach up to 98% under different PB concentrations, flow rates, and light intensities. This technology provides a microfluidic microreactor for the synthesis of copper metal-organic framework (MOF) and has a wide range of applications in laboratory-on-a-chip settings, applied chemistry, and biomedical engineering.

Fabrication of syntactic foam fillers via integrated on/off-chip microfluidic methods for optimized geopolymer composites

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents an improved method for the fabrication of syntactic foam fillers (SFFs) using microfluidic expansion and thermal contraction. The use of greener geopolymer as the binder matrix resulted in strong interfacial bonding in the geopolymer syntactic foams (GSFs). The compressive yield strength of GSFs was found to be inversely proportional to the volume fraction of SFFs, and even after thermal exposure, the specimens maintained their shape integrity and exhibited similar mechanical performance.

Synthesis of tubular silica fiber via all-aqueous microfluidics for geopolymer regulation

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: This article proposes an all-aqueous microfluidic method for preparing tubular polymeric fibers as preceramic templates, which can be used to fabricate ceramic microfibers. The chemically formed interfacial bonding between tubular silica microfibers and geopolymer matrix is confirmed by elemental analysis. The addition of silica microfibers significantly improves the flexural modulus of geopolymer composites and effectively inhibits crack propagation under thermal circumstances.

Summary: This study proposes a novel bioinspired design strategy that combines regional particularity and overall cyclicity to innovate the connotation of long-range periodicity inside the metamaterial. The design incorporates crossed-lamellar struts and node constraint gradient to guide the deformation sequence and enhance self-strengthening response during compression. In situ experiments and finite element analysis confirm the effectiveness of this design in achieving progressive, hierarchical deformation and excellent energy absorption capacity.

Microfluidic encapsulation of soluble reagents with large-scale concentration gradients in a sequence of droplets for comparative analysis

Xugen Chen et al.

Summary: Concentration gradient plays a crucial role in comparative analysis in the fields of biomedicine and chemistry. This study presents a simple microfluidic device that allows the encapsulation of soluble reagents with large-scale concentration gradients in nanoliter-scale water-in-oil droplets for comparative analysis. The concentration gradients can be easily adjusted by changing the flow rates of the coaxial channels. With this method, nanoliter-grade reagents can be prepared, reactions can be conducted, and analyses can be performed with higher concentration gradients and less sample consumption.

Effect of electrolytes in the water phase on the stability of W1/O/W2 double emulsions

Eunji Kwak et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve the physicochemical stability of water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions by using different formulations. The results showed that the smallest droplet size of the double emulsions was observed at 50% inner emulsion fraction, regardless of the osmotic agent. The viscosity and encapsulation efficiency of the double emulsions increased with increasing inner emulsion fraction.

Production of calcium magnesium phosphate microspheres in a water-in-oil-in-water dispersion

Isao Kimura et al.

Summary: In this study, interfacial reaction in a multiple water-in-oil-in-water dispersion was conducted to produce hollow microspheres in a system containing calcium, magnesium, and phosphate ions. The surface state of the microspheres changed from rough to smooth with increasing magnesium content in the outer aqueous phase, and the morphology of the primary particles was altered from sheet-like to spherical.

Continuous microfluidic fabrication of anisotropic microparticles for enhanced wastewater purification

Xiaokang Deng et al.

Summary: Anisotropic microparticles with various shapes were continuously prepared using a simple strategy that involved deforming oil-droplet templates within microfibers and locking their shapes via thermo/photo-polymerization. The size and geometry of the oil-droplet templates were precisely controlled by altering fluid flow conditions. Functionalized rod-like microparticles exhibited superior performance in removing contaminants compared to spherical microparticles, as they had a larger specific surface area for improved contact between catalysts and pollutants. Additionally, the magnetic rod-like microparticles could be easily recovered and reused without compromising their catalytic efficiency.
