Among them, Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (MSNs) combined with upconversion nanoparticles have gained prominence in biomedicine research due to their remarkable properties in drug targeting, bio-imaging, and photodynamic/photothermal therapy. MSNs have versatile pore sizes, high drug loading efficiency, and can be functionalized to enhance their applicability. This article focuses on MSN-based hybrid nanotheranostics and their designing strategies, characterization, applications, efficacy, limitations, biotoxicity, as well as current challenges and future perspectives.
