Distribution Pattern and Influencing Factors for the Temperature Field of a Topographic Bias Tunnel in Seasonally Frozen Regions

Wenbin Tang et al.

Summary: This paper studies the distribution law and influence factors of temperature field for topographically biased tunnel in seasonally frozen regions using on-site monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. The numerical results are in good agreement with the on-site monitoring data, validating the accuracy of the numerical model. The effects of slope angle and overburden thickness on the temperature field of the tunnel are further analyzed, providing important theoretical and engineering guidance for tunnel engineering in seasonally frozen regions.

Linking the mechanical properties of frozen sandstone to phase composition of pore water measured by LF-NMR at subzero temperatures

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: Freezing can greatly strengthen water-bearing porous rocks, with the strength of frozen sandstone increasing in three stages as temperature decreases from 0 to -20 degrees C. The phase composition of pore water also displays two distinct freezing stages, with unfrozen water content rapidly decreasing from 0 to -4 degrees C and adsorbed water partially freezing from -4 to -20 degrees C.

Evolutions of the unfrozen water content of saturated sandstones during freezing process and the freeze-induced damage characteristics

Lei Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, LF-NMR tests were conducted on frozen sandstone samples to analyze the unfrozen water content and changes in the freezing process. The experimental results show that the pore size distribution significantly affects the speed of water-ice phase transition, with larger pores leading to faster transitions. Freeze-induced strains in frozen sandstones increase rapidly between 0 degrees C to -10 degrees C, then stabilize, and the impact of movable water on freezing strain depends on pore size distribution.

Thermal characteristics investigation of a high-speed railway tunnel by field monitoring in Northeast of China

Haiqiang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study recorded key environmental factors, such as temperature, wind speed, and wind direction at tunnel site, to determine the thermal characteristics of tunnels in cold regions. The results showed that these factors, along with topography and tunnel orientation, co-determine the thermal characteristics inside the tunnel. On the coldest day, the temperature of air and tunnel structure exhibited an asymmetric parabolic curve distribution, different from the surrounding rock. Additionally, it was found that the wind speed inside the tunnel is directly affected by that outside, and the frost depth and frost index varied with the distance from the tunnel entrance to the exit.
