Experimental investigation of the mechanical properties of hydrophobic polymer-modified soil subjected to freeze-thaw cycles

Weitong Xia et al.

Summary: Freeze-thaw action has a severe impact on the engineering properties of soil in cold regions. An eco-friendly hydrophobic polymer was used to improve saline soil in a seasonally frozen region. While the treated soil showed an increase in strength and denser structure, successive freeze-thaw cycles resulted in a degradation of strength and toughness.

Description of different cracking processes affecting dispersive saline soil slopes subjected to the effects of frost and consequences for the stability of low slopes

Mengxia Han et al.

Summary: To deal with soil salinisation and improve ecosystems, the local government initiated water diversion projects in western Jilin Province. The study reveals the failure mechanism of saline soil slopes, including freeze-heave cracks, scouring cracks, suffosion cracks, and unloading cracks. The findings provide a theoretical basis for slope treatment.

Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling of frost heave and water migration during artificial freezing of soils for mineshaft sinking

M. Zhelnin et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) model to study the effects of frost heave and water migration on the formation of a frozen wall and excavation activity in frozen soils. The model considers primary variables such as porosity, temperature, and displacement, and incorporates constitutive relations for mechanical deformation. The model is validated through comparison with experimental data and applied to numerical simulations in a real-world engineering scenario.

Chemical characteristics of salt migration in frozen soils during the freezing-thawing period

Mengqin Wang et al.

Summary: Field experiments were conducted to analyze the non-synchronized movement of soil water and salt during freezing-thawing periods, with a focus on soil salt composition and convection-diffusion theory. The results shed light on the mechanisms underlying soil water and salt dynamics in agricultural systems with shallow groundwater tables.

Multi-scale pore structure characterization of lacustrine shale and its coupling relationship with material composition: An integrated study of multiple experiments

Rixin Zhao et al.

Summary: Characterizing the microscopic pore system of organic-rich shales is crucial for understanding the occurrence and flow behavior of shale oil. This study quantitatively characterized the full-scale pore structure of typical lacustrine shales in the northern Songliao Basin, China, and analyzed the coupling relationship between multi-scale pore structure and material composition. The results showed that these shales mainly developed inorganic interparticle pores related to clay minerals, as well as a small amount of organic matter pores. The full-scale characterization revealed that the shales mainly developed micropores and mesopores, with the pore size primarily distributed below 150 nm. Clay minerals and carbonate minerals were found to govern the development of II-micropores and macropores, while organic matter controlled the development of I-micropores.

Effect of varying pore water salinity on frost susceptibility behaviour of soils

Rufaidah Shah et al.

Summary: The susceptibility of soil to frost action is a major concern for engineering infrastructure in regions with seasonal freezing and thawing. The presence of solutes in pore water can affect frost susceptibility by reducing the total ice content during freezing. An experimental study showed that solutes decrease the freezing point of soil and decrease heave rate, maximum heave, and frost penetration depth. The presence of solutes also limits adverse effects during thawing and restricts microstructural damage in the soil.

Groundwater regulation for coordinated mitigation of salinization and desertification in arid areas

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: Desertification and salinization are threats to the ecosystem services in inland river oases of arid regions. Previous studies have mainly focused on either desertification or salinization, but there is a lack of joint studies on the two issues. This paper takes Luocheng Irrigation District in the Heihe River Basin of northwestern China as an example and proposes a solution that involves transporting excess groundwater from salinized areas to the transition zone to combat both desertification and secondary salinization. An engineering system is designed for coordinated groundwater regulation and implemented through an experimental farm in the irrigation district.

X-Ray microtomography of mercury intruded compacted clay: An insight into the geometry of macropores

Shengyang Yuan et al.

Summary: Soil properties are closely related to the soil microstructure. Two different techniques, MIP and X-mu CT, were used to characterize the microstructure of the soil in this study. The results showed that macropores were evenly distributed within the specimens, with most of them having a non-spherical shape and an aspect ratio smaller than three.

Soil salinity and its associated effects on soil microorganisms, greenhouse gas emissions, crop yield, biodiversity and desertification: A review

Zied Haj-Amor et al.

Summary: Although significant research has been conducted on the effects of soil salinity issue on agricultural productivity, limited consideration has been given to its critical effects on soil biogeochemistry, land desertification, and biodiversity loss. This article synthesizes information from 238 articles published between 1989 and 2022 and highlights the impact of soil salinity on microbial community composition, soil organic carbon content, greenhouse gas emissions, crop yield, soil biodiversity, and desertification. The study emphasizes the need for innovative mitigation strategies that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and calls for further research to address knowledge gaps and improve understanding of salinity effects.

Comprehensive evaluation and interpretation of mercury intrusion porosimetry data of coals based on fractal theory, Tait equation and matrix compressibility

Quanlin Yang et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of coal pore structure is essential for understanding gas storage and migration mechanisms. This study used fractal theory and the new Tait equation method to analyze MIP data of coal, finding that simultaneous interparticle void filling affects 1.9-3.4% of total intrusion volumes, while matrix compression can account for 46.72-80.41%. When combined with low pressure N2 gas adsorption, the TE method provides TPV values closer to the BJH model for pore sizes in the range of 33-320 nm, while the MC method is more suitable for correcting smaller pore sizes in MIP data.

Coupling of Hofmeister effect, electrolyte concentration, and mechanical composition in soil loss: Runoff simulation study

Shishu Yang et al.

Summary: The intensity of soil loss in runoff is controlled by electrostatic repulsive forces among soil particles, which are influenced by cation surface reactions, electrolyte concentration, and soil particle size composition. The Hofmeister effect was found to play a critical role in this study. Increasing the soil's large particle content enhances soil loss intensity but does not necessarily increase soil loss quantity.
