Optimal reinforcement for improving the thermal performance of a permafrost tunnel based on coupled heat-mass transfer

Shuangyang Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a coupled heat-mass transfer model based on mass, energy, and momentum conservation principles for the Fenghuoshan Tunnel. By comparing computed and monitored temperatures, the numerical model is proven to be accurate. The study identifies the most unfavorable position and time point for designing an optimal reinforcement to improve thermal performance, and determines the optimal thickness of aerogel felt along the whole tunnel. The study provides theoretical support for designing a safe and economical reinforcement on permafrost tunnels and understanding the coupled heat-mass transfer processes.

Performance degradation of polymer material under freeze-thaw cycles: A case study of extruded polystyrene board

Fujun Niu et al.

Summary: Polymer materials like XPS, PU, and EPS are commonly used as thermal insulators in cold regions to protect engineering structures from frost damage. A study on XPS board subjected to freeze-thaw cycles found minimal changes in water absorption and thermal conductivity, while compressive strength and Young's modulus decreased with increasing cycles, particularly in the initial 50 cycles. The creep behavior of XPS board was categorized as decay creep, with the creep process described well by an exponential function. The results provide insights into the degradation of XPS board and offer references for mitigating engineering damages caused by freeze-thaw cycles in cold regions.
