New Perspectives for Nonlinear Depth-Inversion of the Nearshore Using Boussinesq Theory

Kevin Martins et al.

Summary: Accurately mapping the changing underwater topography in wave-breaking areas is challenging but crucial for understanding sandy beach morphodynamics. Existing linear depth-inversion algorithms face theoretical and/or technical issues in the surf zone, limiting their accuracy. In this study, we propose a new depth-inversion approach based on Boussinesq theory, which quantifies nonlinear dispersion effects in nearshore waves. Experimental results show that this approach significantly improves accuracy in the surf zone, making it a promising method for practical applications using remote sensing technologies.

Integration of data-driven and physics-based modeling of wind waves in a shallow estuary

Nan Wang et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid approach was developed by integrating a physics-based SWAN model with machine learning algorithms to predict wind waves in a shallow estuary. The study found that the hybrid approach (BRT-SWAN) can be an efficient tool for modelers to identify sources of error and calibrate parameters in physics-based models. Furthermore, the study showed that the hybrid approach achieved a similar level of accuracy to the approach trained with field observations of wind waves.

Data-driven modeling of wind waves in upper Delaware Bay with living shorelines

Nan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wave characteristics around constructed oyster reefs (CORs) in upper Delaware Bay and develops soft computing-based models to predict long-term wave characteristics. The results show that CORs can significantly attenuate wave energy and height, which is significant for protecting coastal ecosystems.

NSFnets (Navier-Stokes flow nets): Physics-informed neural networks for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

Xiaowei Jin et al.

Summary: In the past 50 years, significant progress has been made in solving Navier-Stokes equations using various numerical methods, but challenges still exist in incorporating multi-fidelity data seamlessly and mesh generation for complex industrial applications. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are employed to directly encode governing equations into deep neural networks, overcoming some limitations for simulating incompressible laminar and turbulent flows. The Navier-Stokes flow nets (NSFnets) are developed using velocity-pressure (VP) and vorticity-velocity (VV) formulations, showing promise in accuracy and convergence rate for benchmark problems as well as turbulent channel flows.

Validation and analysis of a 1-D variational assimilation scheme for bathymetry inversion

Akhil Salim et al.

Summary: The study presents results of a data assimilation and bathymetry inversion scheme based on surfzone hydrodynamics for a narrow-banded wave spectrum. Wave height observations were found to be more informative for bathymetry inversion compared to alongshore current observations. The model consistently inverted bathymetry and tracked morphologic change in varied wave conditions, including during large storm events.
