Blood-Brain Barrier-Associated Proteins Are Elevated in Serum of Epilepsy Patients

Elzbieta Bronisz et al.

Summary: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction is one of the mechanisms behind seizures and epileptogenesis. This study analyzed serum levels of BBB-associated proteins in patients with epilepsy during the interictal period. The results showed elevated levels of MMP-9, MMP-2, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, and S100B, suggesting chronic disruption and restoration of BBB in patients with epilepsy.

Summary: This study aims to re-assess the definition of drug-resistant epilepsy based on a large-scale, long-term study including both adults and children. The study found that the definition of drug-resistant epilepsy should differ across different epilepsy types, and provided indicators for each type.

Treatment response in newly diagnosed epilepsy: a syndromic approach

Ali A. Asadi-Pooya et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the seizure outcome and associated factors in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy using a syndromic approach. The results showed that approximately 52.7% of patients were seizure-free for at least one year after the first treatment plan. Drug-resistance was higher in patients with focal epilepsy and symptomatic generalized epilepsy. Implementation of appropriate personalized treatment plans is crucial for patients with epilepsy.

The Interconnected Mechanisms of Oxidative Stress and Neuroinflammation in Epilepsy

Anna L. M. Parsons et al.

Summary: One of the most important characteristics of the brain is its high metabolic demand, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can cause oxidative stress (OS). OS is associated with many neurological disorders, including epilepsy. Neuroinflammation and excessive production of ROS are likely key features of seizure initiation and propagation. This review explores the role of OS in epilepsy, its connection to neuroinflammation, and its impact on synaptic function. It also discusses the latest advances in anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) and their interaction with OS.

Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs): An Advanced Drug Delivery System Targeting Brain through BBB

Mantosh Kumar Satapathy et al.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is crucial in protecting and maintaining homeostasis in the brain, making it an interesting target for drug delivery in the treatment of neurological conditions. Advances in nanodrug delivery have led to solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) emerging as a promising drug carrier system for delivering therapeutic drugs across the BBB to target CNS disorders more effectively and with reduced toxicity.
