Dietary Saturated Fats and Health: Are the US Guidelines Evidence-Based?

Arne Astrup et al.

Summary: Research in the past decade has shown a lack of rigorous evidence to support continued recommendations to limit saturated fats or replace them with polyunsaturated fats. However, recent U.S. Dietary Guidelines still recommend limiting saturated fats to 10% of total energy intake without considering the findings of these studies. This recommendation also overlooks the important effects of the food matrix and overall dietary pattern when consuming saturated fatty acids.

Cardiovascular Disease in Chronic Kidney Disease Pathophysiological Insights and Therapeutic Options

Joachim Jankowski et al.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease face an increased risk of cardiovascular events, with advanced CKD stages significantly elevating the risk. Cardiovascular events, rather than end-stage kidney disease, are the leading cause of death in this high-risk population, and CKD causes a proinflammatory state that affects the cardiovascular system.

Dietary intakes of monounsaturated fatty acids and risk of mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease and cancer: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Keyhan Lotfi et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 17 prospective cohort studies and found an inverse association between MUFA intake and risk of all-cause mortality, but no significant link was found between MUFA consumption and mortality from CVD or cancer.

Dietary Lipids and Dyslipidemia in Chronic Kidney Disease

Zdzislaw Kochan et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with altered lipid metabolism, leading to increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Unsaturated fatty acids have shown cardioprotective effects by improving blood lipid profile and reducing cardiovascular risk, making dietary lipids crucial in nutritional management of CKD patients.

Association of polyunsaturated fatty acids with improved heart rate variability and cardiovascular events in patients with end-stage renal disease receiving maintenance dialysis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Chu-Lin Chou et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of PUFA supplements on cardiovascular protection in ESRD patients receiving maintenance dialysis. The results showed that PUFA supplements appeared to reduce cardiovascular events and improve HRV, indicating potential benefits for this patient population. Further research with longer follow-up periods is needed to confirm these findings.
