Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Prevalence of colonization with multidrug-resistant bacteria in communities and hospitals in Kenya

Teresa Ita et al.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (ESCrE), carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in communities and hospitals in Kenya. The results showed that human colonization with ESCrE and CRE was common, especially in hospitals and urban settings, while MRSA colonization was rare. Evaluation of risk factors and genetic mechanisms of resistance can guide prevention and control efforts tailored to different environments.

Point-prevalence survey of antibiotic use at three public referral hospitals in Kenya

Sylvia Omulo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variation in antibiotic use in three regional public hospitals in Kenya. The findings revealed inappropriate antibiotic use, particularly in pediatric and surgical populations. The research calls for the development of antimicrobial stewardship programs and guidelines tailored to these hospitals.

Alterations in the oral microbiome in HIV infection: causes, effects and potential interventions

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: A massive depletion of CD4(+) T lymphocytes in early and acute HIV infection disrupts the balance between the human microbiome and immune responses. Studies on alterations in gut microbiota in HIV have increased, but few have explored the significance of oral microbiome in HIV-infected individuals. Dysbiosis of oral microbiota in people living with HIV has been observed, potentially due to immunodeficiency in the oral cavity. Antiretroviral therapy has reduced opportunistic oral infections in HIV-infected individuals, but dysbiosis in oral microbiome persists.ongoing studies to investigate probiotics' effects on oral microbiome in HIV-infected individuals. However, the effects of ART and probiotics on oral microbiome in HIV-infected individuals remain unclear, highlighting the need for further research for effective preventive and therapeutic strategies for HIV infection.

Global antibiotic consumption and usage in humans, 2000-18: a spatial modelling study

Annie J. Browne et al.

Summary: This study estimates global antibiotic consumption using multiple data sources and statistical models, highlighting large variations in antibiotic usage in low- and middle-income countries. The findings show a 46% increase in global antibiotic consumption from 2000 to 2018, with significant regional disparities.

Multi-country cross-sectional study of colonization with multidrug-resistant organisms: protocol and methods for the Antibiotic Resistance in Communities and Hospitals (ARCH) studies

Aditya Sharma et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the population-based prevalence and risk factors associated with MDRO colonization among community-dwelling and hospitalized adults in multiple countries, providing a better understanding of the global epidemiology of MDROs and guiding the development of mitigation strategies in both community and healthcare settings. The standardized baseline surveys conducted can also inform future studies seeking to further characterize MDRO epidemiology globally.

Unique Gut Microbiome in HIV Patients on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Suggests Association with Chronic Inflammation

Aya Ishizaka et al.

Summary: The study found that HIV-infected patients have changes in gut microbiome composition, including dysbiosis related to chronic inflammation, with alterations in abundance of certain taxa and associations with inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, HIV-associated dysbiosis shifts the immunological balance towards inflammatory responses.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Multidrug-Resistant Organisms Colonization in Long-Term Care Facilities Around the World: A Review

Angel Rodriguez-Villodres et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the prevalence and risk factors for colonization by multidrug-resistant organisms in long-term care facilities, offering useful reference for implementing successful antimicrobial stewardship programs. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant organisms varies by continent, with different continents reporting different rates for various organisms. Risk factors for colonization include male sex, chronic wounds, use of medical devices, and previous antibiotic use.
