Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Young Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Sarantis Livadas et al.

Summary: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at higher risk for dysglycemia and type 2 diabetes compared to healthy BMI-matched women of reproductive age. The incidence of this disorder varies among studies, and there is no consensus on the best screening method and frequency. Universal screening with oral glucose tolerance test is suggested to identify and manage glycemic abnormalities in young women with PCOS, regardless of age or BMI status. Regular follow-up and lifestyle interventions, such as balanced diet and exercise, are important for this specific population.

Polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A state-of-the-art review

Sarantis Livadas et al.

Summary: This review discusses the epidemiology and pathophysiology of dysglycemia in PCOS, as well as the assessment methods and risk factors for T2D development in this population. It also provides recommendations for holistic management of T2D risk in PCOS, including adopting a healthy lifestyle, improving dietary patterns, avoiding endocrine-disrupting substances, regular exercise, and certain medications. Maintaining a healthy weight is highlighted as a key factor in reducing T2D risk in women with PCOS.

Can dysglycemia in OGTT be predicted by baseline parameters in patients with PCOS?

Sarantis Livadas et al.

Summary: This study found a higher prevalence of dysglycemia (T2DM, IGT, and IFG) in women with PCOS. OGTT was essential for T2DM diagnosis. Age and BMI were not associated with the prevalence of T2DM or IFG, but BMI was associated with IGT. None of the factors prevailed as a useful marker in clinical practice.

Dysglycemia screening with oral glucose tolerance test in adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome and relationship with obesity

Jyotsna Gupta et al.

Summary: In evaluating glucose abnormalities in adolescents with PCOS, it was found that IGT is significantly increased in patients with obesity, with abnormal glucose metabolism identified in over one-fifth of the patients. HbA1c alone may not be a good test to assess IGT, and it is recommended that adolescents diagnosed with PCOS and obesity undergo formal oral glucose tolerance testing.

Risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with obesity: a meta-analysis of observational studies

Panagiotis Anagnostis et al.

Summary: Although the exact risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is unknown, studies suggest that women with PCOS have an increased risk of T2DM compared to non-PCOS women only if they are obese or overweight.
