Endoscopic ultrasound guided radiofrequency ablation for pancreatic tumors: A critical review focusing on safety, efficacy and controversies

Tawfik Khoury et al.

Summary: The role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has shifted from diagnostic tool to important therapeutic tool, especially for pancreato-biliary disorders. In recent years, EUS has been used for treating pancreatic diseases, including the implementation of radiofrequency ablation (RFA). EUS-RFA shows promising results for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms, adenocarcinoma, and pancreatic cystic lesions, but further research is needed.

Study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial to compare radiofrequency ablation with surgical resection for treatment of pancreatic insulinoma

Stefano Francesco Crino et al.

Summary: This study compares the safety and efficacy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) with surgery for the management of insulinoma. The aim is to determine if EUS-RFA can be the first-line therapy for small, sporadic pancreatic insulinoma and be included in a step-up approach in case of clinical failure.

Elia Armellini et al.

Summary: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) is a safe and effective minimally invasive technique for the treatment of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (Pan-NETs), especially for low-grade NF- or F-Pan-NETs patients who are not eligible or have a high risk for surgery.

Summary: This article presents a preliminary clinical experience in treating pancreatic insulinomas <2 cm by EUS-RFA. The results show that EUS-RFA is feasible and effective in managing small neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas with an acceptable safety profile. However, further evidence is needed to assess long-term survival and recurrence.
