Oral Sources of Salivary Metabolites

Eelis Hyvaerinen et al.

Summary: The oral cavity is diverse and saliva plays a vital role in oral health maintenance. Saliva metabolism has been used to investigate oral and general diseases by detecting diagnostic biomarkers. There are multiple sources of salivary metabolites in the mouth. This review emphasizes the factors to consider when examining saliva as a diagnostic biofluid for various diseases, including the potential risk factors for general diseases and their relationship to overall body function.

Salivary film thickness and MUC5B levels at various intra-oral surfaces

Z. Assy et al.

Summary: In this study, the salivary film thickness and MUC5B levels in various intra-oral locations were investigated in healthy volunteers. The findings demonstrate unequal distribution of the salivary film and MUC5B levels in different regions of the oral soft tissues. Furthermore, there was no association between the palatal surface area and the salivary film thickness.

Evaluation of Salivary Mucin, Amylase, Protein Profile, and Periodontal Parameters among Hypertensive and Diabetic Patients

Madiha Anwar et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels of salivary composition and oral inflammatory parameters in patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HTN). The results showed alterations in salivary flow rate, pH, amylase, and mucin levels in T2DM and HTN patients, indicating an increased inflammatory burden in the oral cavity.

Comparing periodontitis biomarkers in saliva, oral rinse and gingival crevicular fluid: A pilot study

Panagiota Katsiki et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the feasibility of screening for periodontitis by measuring biomarkers in saliva, oral rinse, and gingival crevicular fluid. Results showed that the combination of MMP-8 and chitinase in oral rinse samples can accurately discriminate between periodontitis and periodontal health/gingivitis, with MMP-8 and TPA concentrations significantly higher in periodontitis patients.
