Evaluation of global teleconnections in CMIP6 climate projections using complex networks

Clementine Dalelane et al.

Summary: The evaluation of climate models is crucial in climatological research, especially concerning the realistic representation of global teleconnections. This study presents the application of the delta-MAPS tool to construct complex networks and infer teleconnections based on spatio-temporal gridded data sets. The results show variations in model performance, with the bipartite network representing ocean-atmosphere interaction exhibiting the most pronounced differences.

Long-Term Variability of Relationships between Potential Large-Scale Drivers and Summer Precipitation in North China in the CERA-20C Reanalysis

Lan Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the multidecadal and interannual variability in summer precipitation in North China using the 110-year Coupled ECMWF Reanalysis of the Twentieth Century (CERA-20C). The findings show that CERA-20C reproduces expected relationships between large-scale drivers and regional summer precipitation anomalies well during 1980-2010, but not in earlier periods. Two potential reasons for this nonstationarity are examined: the need for strong data assimilation constraints in atmospheric models and the less general nature of large-scale drivers inferred from recent records.

Diurnal asymmetry of desert amplification and its possible connections to planetary boundary layer height: a case study for the Arabian Peninsula

Liming Zhou

Summary: This study investigated the diurnal and vertical variations of desert amplification (DA) over the Arabian Peninsula, finding that the surface warming rate is inversely related to the magnitude of planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) and DA exhibits a distinct diurnal asymmetry with stronger warming for shallower PBLH. Results indicate that PBLH biases may explain some of the diurnal and vertical warming/cooling biases in reanalysis data, suggesting the importance of PBLH in modulating the structure of DA through heat redistribution via turbulent mixing.

Rising Planetary Boundary Layer Height over the Sahara Desert and Arabian Peninsula in a Warming Climate

Liming Zhou et al.

Summary: Turbulent mixing in the planetary boundary layer plays a critical role in the vertical exchange of heat, moisture, momentum, trace gases, and aerosols. This study examines the spatial patterns of long-term PBLH trends over land and finds consensus on increasing PBLH over the Sahara Desert and Arabian Peninsula and declining PBLH in India. The changes in PBLH are significantly correlated with changes in surface heating and moisture at the global scale.

Teleconnections Governing the Interannual Variability of Great Plains Low-Level Jets in May

Shubhi Agrawal et al.

Summary: A spectral analysis and objective dynamical jet classification framework were used to investigate the interannual variability of Great Plains 850-hPa winds during the warm season, with a peak in May potentially influenced by teleconnections. Differentiating between jet types revealed significant differences in precipitation and wind intensity in the U.S. south-central plains, with distinct planetary-scale Rossby wave patterns indicating underlying teleconnections. These large-scale teleconnections impact LLJ class frequency and intensity through upper-level geopotential anomalies, modulating near-surface geopotential and temperature gradients.

Drivers of the evolution and amplitude of African Humid Periods

Laurie Menviel et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the strengthening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation plays a dominant role in the abrupt initiation of African Humid Periods, while the presence of residual Northern Hemispheric ice-sheets may delay the peak of the humid periods. Differences in the rate of insolation increase during the penultimate deglaciation compared to the last deglaciation explain the timing differences in the onset of African Humid Periods during these two periods.
