Evaluation of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis precipitation datasets over Spain (1951-2020)

Jose Gomis-Cebolla et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of the ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis precipitation products from ECMWF at the country scale in Spain. A comprehensive assessment is conducted using various methods including continuous, categorical, probability distribution function, spatial pattern, and temporal trend analyses. The results show a good agreement between the observations and ERA5-Land/ERA5 estimates, with high correlation values, low root mean square error, and good efficiency. However, the performance varies depending on climatic region, precipitation intensity, and orography. The ERA5-Land/ERA5 tends to overestimate light and moderate precipitation but underestimate heavy and violent precipitation categories.

Multivariate bias correction of regional climate model boundary conditions

Youngil Kim et al.

Summary: To improve modeling capacities, a better understanding of physical relationships and higher skill climate models are needed. Regional Climate Models (RCMs) are commonly used to resolve finer scales, but their application is restricted by systematic biases within Global Climate Models (GCMs) datasets. Hence, it is advisable to remove these biases in GCM simulations prior to downscaling. Various techniques have been formulated to correct the biases, but most correct each variable independently, leading to physical inconsistencies. This study investigates bias corrections ranging from simple to complex techniques and shows that applying bias correction to RCM boundaries significantly improves model performance, with multivariate bias correction better representing extreme events.

Mesoscale convective systems in the third pole region: Characteristics, mechanisms and impact on precipitation

Julia Kukulies et al.

Summary: The climate system of the Third Pole region is highly sensitive to global warming, and mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) play a vital role in this system. The impact of MCSs on precipitation and flood risk in the downstream regions is significant, but there are methodological and regional differences in studying MCSs. By using a common framework, we can understand the characteristics, mechanisms, and impact of MCSs on seasonal and extreme precipitation in the region, and address knowledge gaps, such as the feedback of MCSs to the climate system, the impact of changing climate on MCS characteristics, and the assessment of flood and drought risks associated with changes in MCS frequency and intensity.

Wind stilling-reversal across Sweden: The impact of land-use and large-scale atmospheric circulation changes

Lorenzo Minola et al.

Summary: This study examines the break in the stilling phenomenon detected around 2010, with a focus on Sweden using wind speed observations from 1997 to 2019. It found that the stilling reversed after 2003, with changes in wind speed driven by large-scale atmospheric circulation and surface roughness variations. Strong winds played a significant role in wind speed changes, with gusts showing greater increases compared to mean wind speeds.

Convection-permitting modelling improves simulated precipitation over the central and eastern Tibetan Plateau

Puxi Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of a convection-permitting model with two mesoscale models in simulating precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau. The mesoscale models exhibited notable wet biases and a spurious early-afternoon rainfall peak, while the convection-permitting model significantly reduced the wet bias and spurious rainfall.

Observation analysis of wind climate in China for 1971-2017 under the demand of wind energy evaluation and utilization

Zhenyu Li et al.

Summary: The statistical characteristics of wind climate in mainland China were analyzed in this study, revealing the differences in wind speed distribution and trends in different regions and seasons. Overall, wind speed has been decreasing in all regions of China, but the trend has slowed down since the 1990s, with some regions even experiencing an increase in wind speed since 2000.

Correcting Precipitation Measurements Made with Geonor T-200B Weighing Gauges near the August-One Ice Cap in the Qilian Mountains, Northwest China

Yanni Zhao et al.

Summary: A precipitation observation network was established in the high-altitude area of the Qilian Mountains in northwest China, where an intercomparison experiment was conducted to study the impact of wind on precipitation measurements and develop correction methods for the entire network. The transfer functions calibrated with local data performed better than those with original parameters. By applying new coefficients derived from local measurements, the corrected snowfall data showed improved accuracy and can be used for snowfall correction at different sites within the network.

ERA5-Land: a state-of-the-art global reanalysis dataset for land applications

Joaquin Munoz-Sabater et al.

Summary: ERA5-Land is a global dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts within the Copernicus Climate Change Service, covering the period from 1950 to the present. It provides enhanced resolution and consistency in describing the evolution of the water and energy cycles, with added value in hydrological and energy cycle analysis.
