Evaluation method for the design results of space gravitational-wave telescopes

Jiancong Li et al.

Summary: Unlike traditional imaging telescopes, space gravitational-wave telescopes have higher requirements for wavefront error and must meet the stability requirement of tilt-to-length (TTL). The tolerance analysis results of current telescopes can determine whether the wavefront error meets the requirements, but not the TTL noise coupling coefficient of the telescope. To analyze the influence of manufacturing errors on the coupling coefficient, a sensitivity matrix was established based on error amount and the Zernike polynomial first-order sensitivity matrix. Using the coupling coefficient as the control requirement improved the cumulative probability of meeting the requirements from 66.7% to 93.8%, verifying the necessity of using the coupling coefficient as an evaluation method for the design results of gravitational-wave telescopes. This evaluation method provides meaningful guidance for the design of gravitational-wave telescopes.

Suppression of coupling between optical aberration and tilt-to-length noise in a space-based gravitational wave telescope

HongAN Lin et al.

Summary: Using the LISA Pathfinder signal, this study analyzed the cancellation and superposition of tilt-to-length coupling noise under various optical aberrations. It proposed proportion requirements for the amplitude of any two aberrations when noise was cancelled, as well as an aberration amplitude control requirement when noise was superposed. By employing these requirements in the gravitational wave telescope optical system, the exiting wavefront error was reduced while suppressing the TTL coupling noise. The proposed approach should be valuable for future telescope design.

The analysis of the far-field phase and the tilt-to-length error contribution in space-based laser interferometry

Qing Xiao et al.

Summary: The arm length of the space-based interferometer for gravitational wave detection is 10(8)-10(9) m, and picometer precision is required. The wavefront error in the far-field coupled with the pointing jitter is a major noise source. The paper extends the analytical solutions of the far-field phase to 21 Zernike aberrations, demonstrating a definite corresponding relationship between aberrations and the far-field phase.

Calculating the precision of tilt-to-length coupling estimation and noise subtraction in LISA using Fisher information

Daniel George et al.

Summary: Unless corrected in post-processing, the dominant noise source in the milli-Hertz band for LISA is projected to be tilt-to-length (TTL) noise from angular jitter. This correction is only possible after removing overwhelming laser phase noise using time-delay interferometry (TDI). A frequency domain model is presented to describe the effects of angular motion on the interferometric signals after propagating through TDI, and Fisher information matrix analysis is applied to calculate the minimum uncertainty of estimating TTL coupling coefficients. The impact of these uncertainties on residual TTL noise is also analyzed.

Summary: This study focuses on the coupling problem between the wavefront error at the exit pupil of the telescope and the TTL noise in space gravitational wave detection. Through theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo method, the influence of the proportion of low-order aberrations on the TTL coupling noise in the design of the telescope optical system is determined, and the optical design of the telescope is completed.
