Limited English Proficient Patient Visits and Emergency Department Admission Rates for Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions in California: a Retrospective Cohort Study

Lucy Schulson et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study in California in 2017 aimed to estimate admission rates from emergency department for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) comparing limited English proficient (LEP) and English proficient (EP) patients. The study found that the observed rate of admission for all ACSC ED visits was higher for LEP than for EP patients, especially for COPD. However, in adjusted analyses, LEP was not a significant risk factor for admission for most ACSCs in both high and low LEP-serving hospitals.
