Antiretroviral Drugs for Treatment and Prevention of HIV Infection in Adults 2022 Recommendations of the International Antiviral Society-USA Panel

Rajesh T. Gandhi et al.

Summary: Based on new data, recommendations are provided to clinicians on the use of antiretroviral drugs for the treatment and prevention of HIV, as well as on laboratory monitoring, care of aging individuals with HIV, substance use disorder, and new challenges such as COVID-19 and monkeypox virus infection. The initiation of antiretroviral therapy as soon as possible after HIV diagnosis is recommended, along with addressing barriers to care and ensuring access to medication and adherence support. Advances in treatment and prevention of HIV have improved outcomes, but challenges and opportunities still exist.

Primary resistance to integrase inhibitors in Shenzhen

Yue Zhu et al.

Summary: This study aims to describe the prevalence of resistance to integrase and drug resistance mutations (DRMs) among ART-naive patients in Shenzhen, China. It found that the prevalence of INSTI resistance in Shenzhen in 2020 was relatively high. Continued surveillance for INSTI resistance is recommended and treatment regimens should be chosen based on the pattern of INSTI resistance, with dolutegravir or bictegravir as the first recommended options.

Life expectancy after 2015 of adults with HIV on long-term antiretroviral therapy in Europe and North America: a collaborative analysis of cohort studies

Adam Trickey et al.

Summary: Life expectancy has increased for people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Latest prognosis data show that the survival rate of adults with HIV who have been on ART for at least 1 year in Europe and North America is similar to that of the general population, regardless of the starting time of ART. However, individuals with low CD4 counts at the start of treatment have lower life expectancy, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and sustained treatment of HIV.

Pre-treatment and acquired antiretroviral drug resistance among people living with HIV in Tianjin, China

Liying Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and patterns of pre-treatment and acquired HIV drug resistance mutations among people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy in Tianjin, China. The results showed that drug resistance mutations were highly prevalent among the participants, highlighting the need for routine resistance testing and viral load surveillance for successful long-term treatment.

Drug Resistance to Integrase Strand-Transfer Inhibitors among HIV-1-Infected Adults in Guangdong, China

Yun Lan et al.

Summary: The study revealed a comparatively low prevalence of INSTI-related drug resistance among HIV-1-infected patients in Guangdong province, China, with some ART-experienced individuals showing mutations conferring resistance to INSTIs. Therefore, surveillance should be reinforced before transitioning to INSTI-containing regimens.

HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitors: a review of current drugs, recent advances and drug resistance

Nokuzola Mbhele et al.

Summary: Antiretroviral therapy is crucial in controlling the HIV epidemic, with integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) becoming more common. INSTIs have a higher genetic barrier to resistance, with DTG showing even higher resistance barriers and CAB being used as the first long-acting agent in HIV-1 treatment.
