Are Developmental Monitoring and Screening Better Together for Early Autism Identification Across Race and Ethnic Groups?

Summary: The study analyzed data from the NSCH (2016-2018) to examine the associations between joint monitoring and screening and early identified cases of ASD in children under 5, as well as the relationships across racial/ethnic subgroups. The findings indicated that joint monitoring and screening, as well as monitoring alone, were associated with early identification of ASD cases across different race groups. However, caution is needed as using monitoring and screening items solely for identification purposes may not be accurate, and further research on joint monitoring with screening is necessary.

Screening for autistic spectrum disorder in early childhood

Summary: This study reviewed existing recommendations and evidence on screening young children for autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and found discrepancies among institutions regarding universal screening. While some evidence shows benefits of early interventions for children with developmental concerns, no evidence was found on the effectiveness of interventions applied to children with ASD detected through screening.

Brief Report: Cumulative Incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorder Before School Entry in a Thoroughly Screened Population

Summary: This study found that children with ASD at 18 months of age exhibit higher rates of difficulties in motor skills, social skills, and communication skills. A careful community-based screening system for autism spectrum disorder may be helpful in early detection of ASD.
