Construction of Benzodithiophene-Based Donor-Acceptor-Type Covalent Triazine Frameworks with Tunable Structure for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Bowei Cai et al.

Summary: The introduction of donor-acceptor motifs into organic semiconductors is an effective strategy to regulate photocatalytic activity. In this study, benzodithiophene-based covalent triazine framework materials (BDT-CTFs) with donor-acceptor motifs were reported. It was found that adjusting the D/A ratio in the BDT-CTF photocatalytic materials can modify the band positions, band gaps, and electron-hole separation efficiency. The high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities of BDT-CTF-1 materials are attributed to their high electron-hole separation and migration efficiency, low electron-hole recombination rates, and special donor-acceptor pore structures. This research provides insights into the structure-activity relationship in BDT-based CTFs and offers a strategy for developing high-performance organic photocatalysts.

Yunyang Qian et al.

Summary: The band alignment and charge transfer features of potential donor-acceptor (D-A) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are assessed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and their exciton binding energy (E-b) can be regulated by adjusting the D-A interaction strengths. By synthesizing the corresponding D-A COFs, it is demonstrated that their photocatalytic hydrogen production activities match well with the calculation results.

Rational Design of Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Modulating Photocatalytic H-2 Evolution

Na Qin et al.

Summary: In this work, two novel vinylene-linked COFs with tuned cyano contents were synthesized and employed as photocatalysts for H-2 generation. The COF with higher cyano content showed a significantly higher photocatalytic H-2 production rate compared to the COF with lower content. The incorporation of cyano groups into COF skeletons precisely tuned the energy levels, expanded visible-light absorption, and improved photoinduced charge separation.

Vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks with manipulated electronic structures for efficient solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production

Zhipeng Xie et al.

Summary: Vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show promise as photocatalysts due to their fully conjugated skeletons, and constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) architectures further enhances photocatalysis. In this study, three D-A-type vinylene-linked COFs were fabricated and their properties were precisely regulated. All three COFs demonstrated attractive photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rates (HERs), with the TM-DMA-COF performing the best. This study provides insights into modulating the photocatalytic activities of COFs and the relationship between structural design and photocatalytic performance.

Jin Zhang et al.

Summary: The simultaneous presence of triazine and ketone acceptors in covalent organic frameworks has been found to enhance electron-hole separation efficiency and improve photocatalytic hydrogen production. COFs with two acceptors showed the highest hydrogen production rate. A single phenyl group as a bridging unit was more favorable for the catalytic reaction, indicating the importance of distance between acceptors in COF design.

Summary: Two new covalent triazine frameworks incorporating phenyl extended naphthalene units have been prepared using thermal and microwave activation. These frameworks show similar chemical structures but exhibit differences in morphology, structural organization, CO2 adsorption capacity, and thermal and optical properties. Additionally, the presence of methoxy groups in the naphthalene core has an influence on some of these properties. The resulting phenyl extended naphthalene CTFs are utilized as metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysts for selective reactions under visible-light irradiation, demonstrating high chemical stability.
