Computational modeling toward full chain of polypropylene production: From molecular to industrial scale

Wei-Cheng Yan et al.

Summary: Since the synthesis of polypropylene in 1954, significant progress has been made in the production of polypropylene, transitioning it from a laboratory discovery to an indispensable industrial product. However, the precise control of the synthesis process to tailor the microstructure and properties remains a challenging issue. Mathematical models have been developed to establish the quantitative relationships between the microstructure and macroscopic properties at various scales, and this review provides an overview of the progress in computational modeling of polypropylene production. It covers aspects such as synthesis, structure-property relationship, reactor design, processing, composites, and applications.

Progress on co-processing of biomass and plastic waste for hydrogen production

Rahul Mishra et al.

Summary: Sustainable energy sources are needed to meet the increasing energy demand caused by population growth. Pyrolysis and gasification can convert biomass and plastic waste into energy. Co-processing, such as co-pyrolysis and co-gasification, has been identified as a key method for converting waste into fuel with higher hydrogen concentrations. The production of hydrogen from biomass and plastic waste using these techniques is being explored for its high conversion efficiencies and low costs. Research on co-pyrolysis and co-gasification for hydrogen-rich syngas production from plastics and biomass is limited, so further studies are needed. This review aims to enhance understanding of these techniques and their potential for sustainable energy production and waste management.

Low-temperature upcycling of polyolefins into liquid alkanes via tandem cracking-alkylation

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: We propose a unique approach to selectively upcycle polyolefin waste by utilizing a highly ionic reaction environment, which increases polymer reactivity and reduces energy required for breaking carbon-carbon bonds. By catalyzing endothermic cleavage and exothermic alkylation reactions, we are able to convert polyethylene and polypropylene to liquid isoalkanes at temperatures below 100 degrees C. This process offers a high yield conversion of unprocessed postconsumer items into high-quality liquid alkanes.

Comparison of the NiAl2O4 derived catalyst deactivation in the steam reforming and sorption enhanced steam reforming of raw bio-oil in packed and fluidized-bed reactors

Leire Landa et al.

Summary: The choice of reactors and reforming strategies significantly affects H2 production from raw bio-oil. Packed-bed and fluidized-bed reactors were compared in terms of conversion, product yields, and deactivation using a NiAl2O4 spinel catalyst for steam reforming and sorption enhanced steam reforming (with dolomite to capture CO2). The results showed that the FBR had lower H2 yields due to less efficient gas-solid contact. Catalyst deactivation was related to coke deposition and varied depending on the reactor type and reforming strategy. The presence of dolomite extended the stable catalyst activity period in both reactors.

From plastic waste pyrolysis to Fuel: Impact of process parameters and material selection on hydrogen production

Ahmed S. Al-Fatesh et al.

Summary: Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, has the potential to replace fossil fuels and reduce environmental pollution. The accumulation of plastic waste materials poses a severe burden on the environment due to the increasing demand for plastics. Thermo-catalytic conversion of plastic waste materials to hydrogen and other fuels is a promising long-term solution to this environmental challenge, but the development of durable and high-efficiency catalysts is a potential challenge for researchers.

Low-temperature CO2 methanation over Ru/CeO2: Investigation into Ru loadings

Chunfen Wang et al.

Summary: The in-depth study of reaction intermediates, especially metal-support interactions, has brought great promise and challenges to the application of Ru-based catalysts in CO2 methanation. Catalysts with different Ru loadings were prepared using CeO2 as the support, and it was found that 1%Ru/CeO2 showed excellent low-temperature methanation activity. The study also revealed that the concentration of oxygen vacancies and the metal-support interaction increased as the metal loading increased. In addition, the formation of CO intermediates was favored under low-temperature conditions, while the formation of HCOO* intermediates was favored under high-temperature conditions.

Pyrolysis-catalytic steam reforming of waste plastics for enhanced hydrogen/syngas yield using sacrificial tire pyrolysis char catalyst

Yukun Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of tire char as a sacrificial catalyst in a two-stage pyrolysis-catalytic steam reforming reactor system to produce hydrogen-rich syngas from waste plastics. The simultaneous steam reforming of pyrolysis volatiles and steam gasification of tire char significantly increases the overall yield of syngas and hydrogen. Manipulating the catalyst temperature, steam input, and char catalyst:plastic ratio has a significant influence on hydrogen yield. The presence of metals in tire char such as Zn, Fe, Ca, and Mg play a catalytic role in steam reforming reactions. The highest syngas production achieved was 135 mmol H2 g(plastic)(-1) and 92 mmol CO g(plastic)(-1) at a catalyst temperature of 1000 degrees C and steam weight hourly space velocity of 8 g h(-)1 g(-1) (catalyst). However, increasing the amount of char catalyst (4:1 char catalyst:plastic ratio) enabled hydrogen yields of 211 mmol g(plastic)(-1) and total syngas yields of 360 mmol g(plastic)(-1) to be achieved.
