β-O-4 linkage breakage of lignin enabled by TiO2 with off/on switchable defect sites for photocatalysis

Xinyu Xiao et al.

Summary: Hydrogenated titanium dioxide (H-TiO2) was synthesized by solvent volatilization, forming Ti-H bonds which were subsequently oxidized to Ti-O bonds in air. Using N2 annealing enhanced oxygen vacancies, improving visible light absorption and prolonging carrier recombination time. The catalytic activity of TiO2 microspheres was doubled by breaking beta-O-4 linkage in lignin models, enabling the transformation of lignin into high-value compounds under visible light. This work presents a new approach to enhance photocatalytic efficiency for practical applications.

Lignin valorization through polymer grafting by ring-opening polymerization and its application in health, packaging, and coating

Camila C. O. Santos et al.

Summary: The growing interest in developing biodegradable polymers as substitutes for non-biodegradable ones has led researchers to explore alternatives for sustainable materials. Lignin, widely produced by biorefineries and paper industries, has been found to play a crucial role in the preparation of polymers and composites through ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Its aliphatic and phenolic reactive hydroxyls can initiate cyclic ester monomers, and it also possesses antioxidant and anti-UV properties as well as biodegradability. Understanding the role of lignin in environmentally friendly materials can overcome current limitations. This review focuses on the polymer grafting onto reactive hydroxyls from lignin surface by ROP, and the use of grafted lignin in biodegradable polymer composites. The impact of lignin surface modification and the monomer-to-initiator ratio on the properties of prepared materials, such as mechanical, thermal, antioxidant, and UV absorbance properties, is discussed, with emphasis on applications in biomedical fields, as well as packaging and coatings.
