Fractionated and purified hybrid poplar lignins as a polyol replacement in rigid polyurethane/polyisocyanurate foams

Christian Henry et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of fractionated lignin as a component in the formulation of rigid PUR/PIR foams. Both hybrid poplar lignin and ALPHA-fractionated lignin were used as substitutes for petrochemical-based polyol in low-density foams. The ALPHA-based lignin outperformed the as-recovered lignin in terms of foam properties, and showed comparable performance to the control foam.

Method for Improved Fluorescence Corrections for Molar Mass Characterization by Multiangle Light Scattering

Zachariah A. Pittman et al.

Summary: In this study, we used multiangle light scattering (MALS) to determine the absolute molar mass of fluorescent macromolecules. We found that bandwidth filters alone are insufficient for blocking fluorescence in some systems. To address this issue, we developed a correction procedure to accurately determine the true molar mass by calculating the amount of fluorescence interference in the filtered signal. We successfully eliminated fluorescence interference in MALS measurements using this approach, demonstrating its potential application for characterizing macromolecules with intrinsic fluorescence.

Carbon fibers derived from liquefied and fractionated poplar lignins: The effect of molecular weight

Sagar V. Kanhere et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conversion of lignin from poplar into carbon fibers and its importance. The researchers found that the Aqueous Lignin Purification with Hot Agents (ALPHA) process could effectively purify and fractionate hybrid poplar lignin. The resulting high molecular weight fraction had very low sugar and ash content, and could be spun into stable carbon fibers. The strength and modulus of these carbon fibers were double those achieved with neat poplar lignin, and the stabilization time was reduced by a factor of five.

Fractionation of lignin using organic solvents: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Veerapandian Ponnuchamy et al.

Summary: The study investigated the single-step fractionation of industrial hardwood kraft lignin using different polarity organic solvents. The experimental results showed that higher polarity solvents such as ethanol and acetone had higher solubility yield. Density functional theory (DFT) results indicated that ethanol had the highest interaction energy, followed by acetone, diethyl ether, and hexane.

Lignin as a Partial Polyol Replacement in Polyurethane Flexible Foam

Akash Gondaliya et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the suitability of various lignins in replacing 20% of petroleum-based polyol in PU foams, finding that the incorporation of lignin improved the foam's mechanical properties. The study also showed a positive correlation between lignin's hydroxyl content and foam properties, suggesting lignins with low hydroxyl content, high flexibility, and high solubility are better candidates for replacing petroleum-based polyols in flexible PU foams.

Molar mass determination of lignins and characterization of their polymeric structures by multi-detector gel permeation chromatography

Evamaria C. Gaugler et al.

Summary: Molar masses, MHS exponents, and dn/dc values of three lignins were determined in DMF with 0.05 M LiBr using multi-detector GPC. The ineffectiveness of fluorescence filters on molar mass determination by GPC-MALS was confirmed, and GPC with viscometry detection showed compact molecular structures for the lignins. Intrinsic viscosity of Protobind 1000 was lower than that of Alcell or Indulin AT for a given molar mass.
