Revealing the Role of CO during CO2 Hydrogenation on Cu Surfaces with In Situ Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy

Jack E. N. Swallow et al.

Summary: The reactions of H-2, CO2, and CO gas mixtures on the surface of Cu at 200 ? were investigated using AP-XPS and AtmP-NEXAFS spectroscopy. The order of gas dosing plays a crucial role in the catalyst chemical state, with metallic Cu preserved when H-2 is introduced before CO2. The addition of CO is essential for removing adsorbed oxygen and activating CO2 on the Cu surface, facilitating methanol synthesis.

Ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of room-temperature oxygen adsorption on Cu(100) and Cu(111)

Bo-Hong Liu et al.

Summary: By using ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), we investigated the room-temperature chemisorption of oxygen on Cu(100) and Cu(111) surfaces. The results showed that Cu(100) is more active for oxygen dissociative chemisorption compared to Cu(111). The presence of a (2 root 2 x root 2)R45 degrees missing-row reconstruction layer on Cu(100) slows down the oxidation process.

Completing the picture of initial oxidation on copper

Yun-Jae Lee et al.

Summary: Accurate atomistic models for metal/oxide interfaces are crucial for understanding copper-based interfacial processes, and in this study, the atomic structures of the 29 and 44 surfaces on Cu(111) are successfully revealed through ab initio STM simulations and experiments. A complete atomistic model for the larger 44 surface is elucidated, providing further insights into early oxidation on copper.
