Iron- and Ruthenium-Catalyzed C-N Bond Formation Reactions. Reactive Metal Imido/Nitrene Intermediates

Yungen Liu et al.

Summary: Transition-metal-catalyzed direct C-N bond formation reactions have been widely used for the synthesis of nitrogen-containing compounds. Iron catalysts are promising due to their cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability, while ruthenium complexes provide more stability for studying the reaction mechanism. This Perspective summarizes the recent developments in iron and ruthenium complexes supported by macrocyclic or polydentate ligands for catalytic amination reactions involving metal imido/nitrene intermediates, and discusses the current limitations and potential opportunities for future research.

Comparison of the Performance of Density Functional Methods for the Description of Spin States and Binding Energies of Porphyrins

Pierpaolo Morgante et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the performance of 250 electronic structure theory methods for the description of spin states and binding properties of metal porphyrins. Results show that current approximations fail to achieve the chemical accuracy target and that semilocal and low-exchange hybrid functionals perform better. Approximations with high exchange can lead to catastrophic failures. More modern approximations perform better than older ones. The study also raises doubts on some of the reference energies calculated using multireference methods.

The Local Coordination Effects on the Reactivity and Speciation of Active Sites in Graphene-Embedded Single-Atom Catalysts over Wide pH and Potential Range

Milica S. S. Ritopecki et al.

Summary: Understanding the effects of local coordination of metal centers in graphene-embedded single-atom catalysts is important for technological advancements. The study found that the local coordination strongly affects the electronic structure and reactivity of the catalysts towards hydrogen and oxygen species. Additionally, stability is significantly affected by the replacement of nitrogen atoms with oxygen or sulfur atoms.

Partial oxidation of methane to methanol on boron nitride at near critical acetonitrile

Tharindu Kankanam Kapuge et al.

Summary: Metal-free methane conversion to methanol with high yield was achieved using boron nitride and acetonitrile as the solvent. Factors such as reaction temperature, catalyst loading, dwell time, and gas-solvent ratios were found to be critical in controlling methane activation and methanol yield. Similar results were obtained when extending the study to ethane.

Mechanistic Insights into Direct Methane Oxidation to Methanol on Single-Atom Transition-Metal-Modified Graphyne

Lakshitha Jasin Arachchige et al.

Summary: This study utilized density functional theory calculations and micro-kinetic studies to investigate the catalytic activity of 3d late-transition-metal atom-loaded graphyne for methane-to-methanol conversion. The research revealed decent stability of single metal atoms at pores of graphyne, and demonstrated that dispersed iron and cobalt single atoms on graphyne are capable of forming catalytically active metal-oxygen (M-O) moieties for this conversion process. Additionally, the strength of the metal-oxygen bond was found to strongly correlate with methane activation and methanol production kinetics.
