Functionalization of the MoS2 basal plane for activation of molecular hydrogen by Pd deposition

Fumihiko Ozaki et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of gaseous hydrogen exposure on bare MoS2 and Pd-deposited MoS2 basal surfaces were investigated using ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that Pd deposition creates an activation site for the dissociation of molecular hydrogen on the inert MoS2 basal surface. Furthermore, hydrogen atoms spill over onto the MoS2 surface, modulating the electronic states of the MoS2 substrate.

Applications of high-resolution scanning probe microscopy in hydroprocessing catalysis studies

F. Besenbacher et al.

Summary: Scanning probe microscopy plays a crucial role in hydroprocessing catalysis by revealing nanoparticle structures, active edge structures, and complex hydrocarbon structures at the atomic scale, as well as providing detailed information on the interaction mechanisms between heteroatom-containing hydrocarbons and catalyst particles. The emerging techniques such as near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy and low-temperature molecular imaging are also highlighted for their potential in advancing the field.
