Enhancement of struvite generation and anti-fouling in an electro-AnMBR with Mg anode-MF membrane module

Yuhan Zhang et al.

Summary: An electrochemical AnMBR with a Mg anode-membrane module showed good performance in mitigating membrane fouling and recovering nutrients during sewage treatment. The application of an electric field reduced membrane fouling by up to 30% and improved water permeability. Additionally, the electrochemical reactions inhibited anaerobic acidification and allowed for the recovery of NH4+ and PO43- as struvite deposits.

Biodegradation performance and anti-fouling mechanism of an ICME/electro-biocarriers-MBR system in livestock wastewater (antibiotic-containing) treatment

Fu Chen et al.

Summary: The novel iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (ICME)/electro-biocarriers-MBR system was effective in removing pollutants from actual livestock wastewater and reducing the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Additionally, the system exhibited good anti-membrane fouling behavior, which could be attributed to the oxidization of membrane foulants by electrochemical products and electrostatic repulsion of foulants and bacterial cells.

Simultaneously enhanced treatment efficiency of simulated hypersaline azo dye wastewater and membrane antifouling by a novel static magnetic field membrane bioreactor (SMFMBR)

Meining Wang et al.

Summary: The operation performance and membrane fouling of a novel static magnetic field membrane bioreactor (SMFMBR) were investigated for the treatment of hypersaline azo dye wastewater. The results showed that SMFMBRs achieved higher efficiency in dye decolorization, COD removal, and detoxification compared to the control MBR without SMF. Among the four reactors studied, the SMFMBR equipped with the highest intensity of 305.0 mT displayed the best treatment performance. The microbial community analysis revealed the enrichment of potentially effective microbes in the SMFMBRs, including Rhodanobacter, Saccharibacteria genera incertae sedis, Defluviimonas, Cellulomonas, Cutaneotrichosporon, Candida, and Pichia. Furthermore, the higher intensity of SMF effectively mitigated membrane fouling by reducing the production of soluble microbial products and extracellular polymeric substances, altering the structure of bio-cakes on the membrane surface, and decreasing the relative abundance of potential fouling-causing microbes.

Polyaniline derived carbon membrane and its in-situ membrane fouling mitigation performance in MBR based on metal-free electro-Fenton

Yue Yang et al.

Summary: An electro-enhanced membrane bioreactor (EMBR) was constructed using a polyaniline-based carbon (PAC) separation membrane as a membrane-electrode for in-situ electro-generation and activation of H2O2 to ·OH without the use of metal catalyst. The EMBR showed improved resistance to membrane fouling compared to the control membrane, with a 77.41% fouling rate. The EMBR also achieved satisfactory wastewater treatment with low levels of chemical oxygen demand and NH4+-N in the effluent.

Modification of nitrifying microbial community via DC electrical field application

Abdelmajeed Adam Lagum et al.

Summary: The effect of intermittent direct current on the nitrifying community structure and performance in a membrane electro-bioreactor (MEBR) was investigated. The MEBR achieved substantial nitrification rates and enhanced NH3+ -N removal compared to a conventional membrane bioreactor (MBR). Different nitrifying bacteria species dominance in the MEBR and MBR led to differences in nitrification performance. Developing a fast and robust nitrifying community in MEBR can lead to cost savings in WWTPs.

Summary: The study demonstrated the superior virus removal efficiency of the new electrochemical membrane bioreactor (EMBR) in wastewater treatment compared to the traditional MBR, mainly due to the reactive oxidants generated in the EMBR system. The EMBR system effectively mitigated the accumulation of pollutants, extending its operational duration to nearly 3 times that of the control group.

David Wolff et al.

Summary: The study investigated the transformation potential of micropollutants in suspended sludge and carrier-attached biofilms of three different hybrid MBBR systems. It found that the carrier-attached biofilms exhibited higher overall transformation potential compared to suspended sludge, especially for certain micropollutants. The analysis also identified specific bacterial taxa associated with micropollutant transformation rates, suggesting their potential as indicators for transformation potential.
