Potential of solid wastes from the walnut industry: Extraction conditions to evaluate the antioxidant and bioherbicidal activities

Carmen Soto-Maldonado et al.

Summary: This study aims to extract compounds with antioxidant activity from walnut waste and use the extract as a bioherbicide. The results showed that temperature and extraction solvent significantly influenced the recovery of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. The ORAC activity of the shell and husk reached 14,000 μmol TE/100 g when extracted at 50°C with ethanol. Juglone was only recovered from the husk at 166 mg/100 g. The extract exhibited a phytotoxic effect and reduced plant density on broad-leaf weeds. In conclusion, walnut processing residues have the potential for high-value product development in the agri-food sector.

Simultaneous removal of antibiotic and nutrients via Prosopis juliflora activated carbon column: Performance evaluation, effect of operational parameters and breakthrough modeling

S. V. Manjunath et al.

Summary: The study found that the Thomas model was better suited for predicting the breakthrough characteristics of MET, PO43-, and NO3- removal by PJAC. In multi-component systems, antagonistic behavior in sorption was observed, resulting in a lower adsorption capacity compared to the mono-component system.

Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine and sulfametazine in single and ternary systems on activated carbon. Experimental and DFT computations

Juan Carlos Serna-Carrizales et al.

Summary: This study investigated the single and ternary removal of sulfonamides from water using granular activated carbon. The results showed that activated carbon had a higher affinity for sulfamethoxazole in ternary systems, and the total adsorption capacity doubled in ternary compared to single systems. Additionally, the study proposed three mathematical models to estimate adsorption capacity for each sulfonamide based on pH, temperature, and initial concentration.

Deeper Insights into the Bohart-Adams Model in a Fixed-Bed Column

Qili Hu et al.

Summary: The study introduces n-order Bohart-Adams and fractal-like Bohart-Adams models, showing non-linear decay and diffusion-limited adsorption processes, respectively. These new models exhibit better fitting performance in practical applications compared to the Bohart-Adams model.
