Performance of wet scrubbers to remove VOCs from rubber emissions

Nur Fadhilah Idris et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of wet scrubbers in removing VOCs from rubber emissions. Critical odorants were identified and it was found that wet scrubbers were not effective in mitigating odorous VOCs, with the concentration of VFAs correlating with the scrubber efficiency.

Nanosecond-pulsed microbubble plasma reactor for plasma-activated water generation and bacterial inactivation

Chenxi Man et al.

Summary: In this study, a microbubble-enabled plasma reactor was developed for the production of plasma-activated water (PAW) by transferring highly reactive plasma species into liquids. The antimicrobial effects of PAW against Escherichia coli cells were investigated, and it was found that microbubble-enabled PAW at a lower temperature had the highest antimicrobial activity. The energy efficiency of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species production in PAW was also evaluated.

Summary: Double dielectric barrier discharge (DDBD) reactors were used to efficiently remove volatile compounds (VCs) from the exhaust gas of a sewage sludge composting facility. The combination of plasma and catalyst showed enhanced removal performance, especially when the initial concentration was low.

Degradation of mixed typical odour gases via non-thermal plasma catalysis

Xie Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the simultaneous treatment of H2S and NH3 odours using plasma, and found that the co-treatment had a facilitating effect on the conversion. The conversion rate of the odours mixture was higher than that of single odours in the single plasma technology, and the by-product emissions were reduced. The M(Ce,Cu)-Mn/13X loaded catalyst showed better catalytic activity and application value.

Advanced Flue-Gas cleaning by wet oxidative scrubbing (WOS) using NaClO2 aqueous solutions

D. Flagiello et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of a Wet-Oxidative Scrubber (WOS) for controlling both SO2 and NOx emissions from exhaust flue-gases. The results show that the WOS can simultaneously remove SO2 and NOx, and the presence of SO2 in the flue-gas enhances the oxidative mechanisms, leading to improved NOx removal efficiency. A predictive model based on experimental dosages of NaClO2 is developed to predict the performance of the WOS unit, including de-SOx and de-NOx efficiencies as well as wash water pH.

Removal of gaseous toluene by nonthermal plasma coupled with wet scrubber containing Fe2+

Chaochao Jiang et al.

Summary: A non-thermal plasma with a wet scrubber (NTP + WS) was used to degrade gaseous toluene. The addition of Fe2+ can improve the removal efficiencies of toluene and by-product ozone. The solubility of toluene and Fe2+ concentration play important roles in the degradation efficiency.

Ethyl acrylate (EA) exposure and thyroid carcinogenicity in rats and mice with relevance to human health

Thomas J. Rosol et al.

Summary: The study found a small but statistically significant increase in thyroid tumors in rats and mice chronically exposed to EA vapors, but most of these tumors were benign. However, results from chronic studies did not support a genotoxic/mutagenic potential for EA, suggesting that the association between EA exposure and thyroid neoplasia may be a chance observation. Due to species-specific physiological differences, the relevance of findings in rodents to human health is questionable.

Simultaneous hydrogen sulfide removal and wastewater purification in a novel alum sludge-based odor-gas aerated biofilter

Baiming Ren et al.

Summary: A novel alum sludge-based odor-gas aerated vertical flow biofilter (Al-OAF) was developed for efficient removal of pollutants in wastewater and H2S generated in wastewater treatment facilities. The study showed high removal efficiency for total phosphorus (TP) and complete removal of H2S in the Al-OAF system. The mechanism of H2S removal is attributed to the adsorption capacity of alum sludge and the reaction by the biofilm in the biofilter.

Experimental Study on Simultaneous Desulfurization and Denitrification by DBD Combined with Wet Scrubbing

Liang Yang et al.

Summary: The experimental study on desulfurization and denitrification using a DBD reactor combined with a wet scrubbing tower showed high desulfurization efficiency (97-100%) and variable denitrification efficiency (12-96%) under different operating conditions. The key problem lies in denitration, with factors such as DBD power, simulated flue gas flow rate, NaOH solution concentration, spray density, packing type, and packing height influencing denitrification efficiency.
