Novel micro-granular sludge process for highly efficient treatment of low-strength and low C/N ratio municipal wastewater

Boran Wu et al.

Summary: A novel high-concentration powder bio-carrier (HPB) process was developed for the high-load treatment of low-strength municipal wastewater with low C/N ratio, which facilitated rapid sludge micro-granulation and enhanced nitrogen removal efficiency. The process achieved higher volumetric load and optimized microbial structure, leading to promising results for the highly efficient treatment of low-strength municipal wastewater.

Targeted clean extraction of phosphorus from waste activated sludge: From a new perspective of phosphorus occurrence states to an innovative approach through acidic cation exchange resin

Yanyan Ding et al.

Summary: By analyzing the spatial distribution and chemical speciation of phosphorus in waste activated sludge, it was confirmed that EPS-bound P and P-precipitates are the major forms of phosphorus, accounting for the majority of total phosphorus. Acid extraction and ACER extraction are effective means for phosphorus recovery, with ACER extraction showing higher efficiency and reduced metal interference.

High concentration powder carrier bio-fluidized bed process: A new perspective for domestic wastewater treatment

Zixuan Liang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the diatomite and Fe-C carriers in the HPB process enriched ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite oxidizing bacteria, increased nitrification rates, and improved substrate utilization by increasing the activity of the electron transfer system. The hydrocyclone separator efficiently recovered carriers, improved their functionality, and renewed microbial aggregation surfaces to enhance substrate adsorption capacity.

Metagenomics reveals a full-scale modified integrated fixed-film activated sludge process: Enhanced nitrogen removal and reduced sludge production

Zixuan Liang et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of the full-scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) and the high-concentration powder carrier bio-fluidized bed (HPB) processes. The results show that the HPB process has a higher total nitrogen removal efficiency and can stabilize the effluent's total nitrogen below 10 mg/L, while reducing sludge production.

Enhancing phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge using anaerobic-based processes: Current status and perspectives

Bohan Yu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic-based processes are green and sustainable technologies for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludges. Different phosphorus species can be released via different anaerobic-based processes, with extracellular polymeric substances and excessive metal ions being the main limiting factors. Acid fermentation and anaerobic fermentation with sulfate reduction show promise in enhancing phosphorus release efficiency.
